Meet Jarvis Francis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jarvis Francis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jarvis. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My journey in photography started in 2008. I was at the time enlisted in the United States Army, and I had this little Nikon point and shoot. I submitted some images to a local media outlet, and they published them. From there, I bought this massive DSLR that I didn’t even know how to use. So, I rolled in a few classes to actually learn the science and art of photography. I was a hobbyist and decided to go pro after rave reviews from a wedding I did for a friend.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been an easy road, but provisions have always been made. In 2017, I was affected by hurricane Harvey which causes the loss of 90% of my photographic equipment.

The week before Harvey, I was involved in an accident where I had to rescue by then fiancé and three-month-old daughter out of a flaming car. Burning my arm and damaging my shoulder in the process. So, needless to say, production was drastically hauled being that I couldn’t handle the workload that was previously presented to me.

I had one functioning camera body and one manual lens. I was displaced and had no mode of transport, but took up odd jobs and eventually was able to purchase another camera set up. Currently, I’m working to amass the same amount of equipment that I’ve owned before. It’s been a piece by piece process, but it’s coming along. It’s been a long bumpy road, but my optimism still remains.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
When I decided to start my professional career in photography, I specialized mainly in weddings which led me to events, which led me to follow the concert circuit. I absolutely love the energy of the press pit.

It’s a thrill to already see the image that you want in your head and to anticipate the talents movement and lighting and shadow to bring that vision to fruition.

I currently photograph a variety of genres ranging from commercial/residential real estate to portraits, to pets!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Optimism, resilience, dedication, and faith. It’s venturing out into the unknown and trusting that things will work out in my favor.

If they don’t, it’s accepting that, that may not have been the path I should have been on, and rerouting from there. It’s getting nine “nos” anticipating that one yes.
