Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Sutton.
Hi Jay, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey really began while I was in the military. I started my podcast called Destroying Doubt while I was in the Air Force to inspire people to go after their dreams while I was pursuing my own. I wanted to work for ESPN Radio, that was my dream. I was a forklift operator in a very hot warehouse in North Carolina and I would listen to ESPN Radio religiously to get me through my day. My favorite show was Max & Marcellus on ESPN LA. They just had so much fun and I aspired to do that one day instead of loading trucks in 100-plus degree temperatures. I knew that I had to go to college in order to make that dream a reality but my wife and I had just been denied buying our first home due to her college debt, so more college debt wouldn’t solve that problem. A former Marine coworker of mine suggested that I join the military to pursue my dreams and to pay for my college. He told me to do my time and get out and not give up on my dreams after I enlisted. Once I joined, I noticed that there were a lot of people that had given up on their dreams and that were just going through the motions. I didn’t want this mentality to infect me so I started podcasting to offer hope and inspiration to my fellow troops. While still in the military, my Destroying Doubt Podcast would garner thousands of downloads, and numerous high-profile guests, and would be listened to in over 30 different countries during a time when podcasting wasn’t as popular as it is now. Thankfully, I was able to land my dream job at ESPN Radio and I wouldn’t stop there. I went from hosting my own afternoon show to hosting a television show on Fox Sports Florida and getting my Master’s degree in Media Communication Studies from Florida State University. I then went on to take all of the knowledge that I learned through the years and start my own media production company, Destroying Doubt Media. Now my goal is to help as many people as possible destroy doubt and to leverage the power of podcasting to get their message out to the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was definitely not a smooth road at all. When Covid hit and the sports world essentially shut down for a bit, I decided to try my hand at teaching. My family and I moved from Florida to Houston during the height of the pandemic as I took over a media program in the area. It was a really great experience being able to interact with such talented students, teach them the fundamentals of audio & video production, and produce the school’s weekly television show. However, it was the most stressful job that I ever had in my life! My mental & physical health were both declining and this led me to suffer a major injury. I ruptured my Achilles and everything changed. I was forced to sit down and think about life. I had complication after complication from surgery and I couldn’t do anything but think about where I had been and where I was headed. It was then through constant prayer and meditation that I developed a vision for my life. I saw myself along with my family traveling the world and living a more flexible nomadic lifestyle. I saw myself going all in on my business and transforming people’s lives. It was a difficult decision to leave those students and also not go back to working in television but I knew where my heart was. This was a very traumatic experience for me but without it, I may still be in the same place.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Destroying Doubt Media?
My business is called Destroying Doubt Media and we are a Media Production Company dedicated to producing high-quality podcast content for business owners looking to launch, grow, and monetize their podcasts.
I believe that what separates my company from other media companies geared towards podcasting is that I’m doing more than just producing people’s shows. You have some companies that email potential guests to be on their client’s show and upload the show for them but I’m able to take it a step further because I actually come from the industry. My experience in television & radio gives me professional industry insight into how to structure a show and produce content that people actually enjoy. I can offer valid interview tips, given the fact that I have interviewed so many high-profile individuals. I can also offer a wealth of technical knowledge that I have gained over the years in high-level professional settings.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
