Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaye Valentine.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Music was something that I always wanted to be part of. Many of my family members play instruments or sing, and one of my cousins has a long history with Motown as an artist, songwriter, and musician. It is just what my family does. I started off singing in the church. I was kind of shy, but when I realized people liked what they heard, I kept doing it. I started my first girl group when I was 12 or 13 and have been in several over the years. During that time, I had great opportunities and experienced a lot. I got to share the stage with music legends like Mystikal, Silk and the Temptations. I ended up going solo a few years ago and haven’t looked back! I was also trained on classical piano for ten years. I have been influenced by so many different genres and have an eclectic appreciation for music in general.
Please tell us about your art.
I write, sing and am an all-around entertainer. I hope people not only appreciate my work but the path I am taking to achieve my goals. I am completely self-funded and independent. I have a degree in Chemical Engineering, and I work very hard to be able to support my career. I want people to know that you do not have to compromise yourself or your values to do what you love to do.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
People get caught up with the fact that they have to choose music over everything and that that is their only option. I took the time to get a degree so that I could be able to support myself and my dreams. I would say think in longer terms and not always about ‘quick money.’ I would also say to take accountability and responsibility for your career!!! I wish I could bold that..lol. No matter how much people love and support you; no one will look out for your best interest better than you. Educate yourself, network and learn as much as you can about the business so that you can make the best-informed decisions for yourself.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My music is on most popular music platforms including iTunes, Pandora, Amazon, iHeartRadio, AppleMusic, and Spotify. The full list can be found on my site. Support my work by streaming and downloading my music, commenting on my social media and sending some prayers up for your girl!
