Today we’d like to introduce you to Jemyre Felton.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child of two military service personnel, I was born on a military base in Germany and I grew up in Killeen, TX. After graduating from C.E.Ellison High School, I attended Prairie View A&M University where I learned so much about life, the world and myself. The experiences I had at this HBCU are incomparable and helped to shape my future. During a pre-med seminar course at Prairie View, I was introduced to several different health profession choices. I connected most with the lifestyle of the Optometrist and decided at that moment that I would pursue this career. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from PVAMU, I attended University of Houston College of Optometry. Upon graduation, I worked for a few years as a fill-in doctor at several optometry practices in and around the city of Houston, TX. In 2012, I opened an independent optometry office in Port Arthur, Texas where I have practiced for the past seven years. I quickly learned the role of business owner and entrepreneur and implemented several small steps to make my office unique. In August of 2019, I opened a new private practice in League City, TX! At this location, I specialize in Sports Vision assessment and training. Sports vision training is a type of optometric vision therapy that enhances sports performance by improving the connection between the eye and brain to process more of what is seen. Studies show that the most successful athletes are those with the best visual-motor functions. Thankfully, I can help train that functional vision.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always roadblocks along the way however, I have never allowed them to deter me or hold me back. During the last semester of my time at Prairie View A&M University, I became pregnant. I moved to Houston alone and gave birth to my first son during my first semester of Optometry school. During my first two years at UHCO, I would often have to miss class to care for my son or bring him to class with me. It was an interesting time of growth where I learned to be an eye doctor while navigating the path of motherhood.
On another note, I have had an interesting journey learning how to run a business. Although I have two degrees and have done lots of studying and learning, small business ownership was not covered in much detail in school. As a result, I have learned bookkeeping, taxes and employee management through trial and error, networking, and books. Opening and maintaining a successful business takes heart, persistence and patience.
Please tell us about Amazing Point of View Eye Care & Eye Gym.
At my League City location, I specialize in Sports vision training, which is a type of optometric vision therapy that enhances sports performance by improving the connection between the eye and brain so that the brain processes more of what the eyes see. Vision is the primary sense used by athletes and accounts for more than 85% of the sensory processing demands used during sports activity. Studies show that the most successful athletes are those with the best visual-motor function. In the same way that an athlete improves sports performance by training the body for strength and endurance, visual skills can be improved and enhanced through a wide range of eye conditioning procedures. Superior visual skills can propel good athletes to higher levels of performance. Sports vision training can improve athletic performance for children and adults alike for players, weekend warriors, firefighters, police officers and military personnel.
How does it work? I perform an initial examination to assess each athletes’ visual abilities pertaining to the sport of their choice. With the results, I evaluate where that athlete ranks in comparison to their peers playing the same sport at the same level of play. I then formulate a training program that improves the areas that the athlete is deficient. Performance training of these skills is not a ‘one size fits all’ approach, as the visual skills for optimum athletic performance will vary, depending on the demands of each sport. I use state of the art training equipment that is also utilized by professional sports teams such as the Houston Astros and Houston Rockets. This training has been proven to improve competitive performance by enhancing situational awareness, focus flexibility, reading of human movement cues, and tracking of dynamic scenes.
Sports Vision assessments and training is what sets my office apart from all of the other general practice Optometry offices out there. I also pride myself on being very informative during my eye examinations. Most of my patients leave with very few questions since I verbally review everything I am evaluating while performing the exam. In my office, my staff and I are down to earth, relatable and educational.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of best parts of my childhood was being a cheerleader! I enjoyed the camaraderie, the constant learning, and being on the sideline under the bright lights on Friday nights. Cheer has always been my passion. It takes a tremendous amount of skill, discipline, and fearlessness. In high school, I was an NCA All-American Cheerleader twice. As a cheerleader, I learned to be a considerate leader that listens, to be diligent and dedicated, to work efficiently with others to complete a task and many other lifelong lessons. Even in my adulthood, I have still managed to keep cheerleading in the forefront of my life. At this time, I am a cheer coach and the Director of the Sagemont Cowboys Cheer and Drill team.
