Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Castle and Jonathan Means.
Jess and Jonathan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Go Polaris Studio started officially in 2017 when we had a sort of life epiphany. I spent an inordinate amount of time pondering the age-old question “what is my purpose?” and took a proverbial inventory of our skill sets. We decided we wanted to work for ourselves doing the things we were best at: creating. I know that sounds incredibly canned and offensively cliche, but I actually mean it in its strongest sense.
Between the two of us, we have, in some professionally rewarded – and most importantly professionally tested – setting, have done quite a huge range across the artistic spectrum. From music studio and live performance, film soundtrack, 3-D graphics, graphic design, directing and acting in amateur film, post VFX, weddings, creative writing, and even audio production – we realized we had, essentially, the skills to offer singular clients the entire media package they need to seriously compete either in the music industry, or on the internet in general as a non music act – all under the same roof.
The average person would have their minds blown by what they can learn for free off the internet with some discipline and time management. We began teaching ourselves the ins and outs of not only business and how to create better art – but more importantly how to merge the two paths. We’ve been called proto-hipsters – we’ve never had the desire to march to the same beat and pride ourselves in providing freshness and unpredictability in whatever it is we do. So – the logical evolution was Go Polaris Studio.
We have lofty goals that are shelved at the moment – but if I had to confess, I want to put an “s” on the end of Studio one day and have dedicated media wings to all art – a dedicated audio wing that functions as a studio and record label – all the way to film/video production houses. Jonathan is a part of local Houston band, Rogues Among Us, and they were our first foray in being a sort of “retainer” media company for a client. Content, shirt and product designs, and video commercials.
After showcasing our content online, several other local musical groups contacted us for media, including Alii Michele and Heights Funk Collective.
Has it been a smooth road?
Having taught ourselves, we faced many challenges! We had to do all the research for the business ourselves, make our own schedules and curriculum, and stay disciplined and motivated to juggle all this while working our day jobs. Like the physicist said from Interstellar, the only thing we fear is time.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Go Polaris Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a multi-media company, and we specialize in providing a fresh approach to a very wide range of content creation that’s pretty universally needed to survive in the current technological world – all under the same roof.
From photography and videography, commercial and cinematic film production, to any form of graphic design and even audio production.
We are proud to be self-taught and offer multiple services with just two people to do it all! We have a unique artistic vision and attention to detail that transcends mediums, as the more disciplines and fields you explore in life, you really notice a lot of repeating patterns.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Having a rebirth of genuine talent – a mini-renaissance. The biggest shift in the content creation industry will be its reaction from more complex machine learning and AI utilization in technical art.
Technological proliferation allowed more and more high-tech tools to get into the hands of more and more amateur people – satisfying a sort of artistic Maslow’s hierarchy – saturating the market on both ends (customer and creator), and eating itself from group-think and copy-cat syndrome.
Now that the dust is settling, the consumers of said content are slowly once again favoring quality over quantity, and, like Tarantino said – as long as you make a kick-butt piece of art, it will speak for itself and rise above the seemingly endless stream of average and acceptable art.
