Meet Jessica Nielsen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Nielsen.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a native Texan who grew up with artistic parents and I tend to view the world through a creative lens. I do not consider myself an artist, but I am frequently told that I am by those closest to me. It is still a concept I am getting used to. I do not yet work as a full time artist but that is what I am working towards. I started drawing when my mom gave me a “drawing the human figure” book when I was twelve and I quickly took to sketching as much as I could. I appreciate that my parents were so open with me about art at a young age. I took art classes all through school and kept up with it through college and into my adult life.

Please tell us about your art.
When I am not painting, I am working on something creative, whether it is sketching, sculpting, crafting, designing or taking photos. Recently, I completed a series of oil paintings that I am really proud of called “Expanse.” This is my first fully conceptualized series I completed this February, based on a lot of personal work I did last year centering around the concept of expanding my mental blocks and limitations. I used the Texas landscape as my muse, referencing a lot of pictures I took in west Texas when I was in my early twenties. The whole concept is really about being authentic and looking deep down at who you really are, finding what you are made of and sharing that with the world. I incorporated myth and numerology to explain what each piece represents.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Just go for it and don’t feel held back by the message to “get a real job,” because creating art IS a real job and life is too short not to follow your passion and dreams. Art is something that we all need to help us get through life a little easier.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Right now I am showing my work in local businesses like coffee shops and churches inside the loop and the Heights. I am hoping to show at a gallery later this year and a local art festival. You can see my portfolio and contact information at www.easelforart.com/jnielsen.
