Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian White.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jillian. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started dabbling in photography in 2012. I enjoyed the creative processes that were required for making nice pictures and art, and the idea of having my own business was appealing as well. I began taking online classes and researching how to use my camera to produce desired effects. I read articles and watched YouTube tutorials for how to use my editing software, and I taught myself how to do so much more just by trial and error. I photographed all of my friends and family as practice, and built up my skills working with people and poses. Over time, I have perfected my technique and developed my own style, but I continue to learn and grow in my photography with each photo session that I book.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest obstacles have probably been with learning new technologies. Not having any experience or formal schooling in cameras or with imaging software was a disadvantage. Self-teaching is a difficulty in itself.
Other challenges have had to do with learning how to operate a business and get clients to sustain the business. Promoting, advertising, budgeting, etc. are all things that successful businesses need to master, and not always easy to do so.
Please tell us about BMG Photography.
BMG Photography specializes in children’s photography and small family portraits. We generally travel to our clients’ place of preference for on-location sessions, but we do have a small studio for newborn photography with a variety of props and backgrounds to choose from. We are a husband and wife team and our focus on customer satisfaction cannot be beat. Our clients receive fully edited images from the photo shoot with in a day or 2 from the session! We can also customize packages and provide professional printing services should a client desire a more personalized photography experience.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have to say that I would’ve known my worth! For too long I undercharged for my services thinking that by having cheap prices, I would secure more clients. I eventually learned that I needed to charge fairly for those 8 hours after the session when I was engrossed in editing perfectly constructed images.
