Meet Jimmy Loyd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Loyd.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
After graduating high school in Arkansas, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do in life and moved to Ventura, California. While there I attended an Audubon Society whale watching trip to the Channel Islands. Only having a kodak instamatic I got very nice pics of the whales and seals and decided that day I wanted to be a photographer. Moving back to Arkansas I took photography classes at the Jr. College, my photo instructor T. Mazar asked me to come work for him at his camera store. He was a genius from New Jersey who knew everything about photography, it was like going to class everyday with him. After 4 years I joined Olan Mills Church Division for 14 years. They were the first ones to change over to digital photography. With digital photography still in its infancy I joined the Houston Chronicle. A great learning experience with them, working with all kinds of lighting situations and different challenges. The best part was interacting with people every day from all walks of life, from politicians, celebrities (Cindy Crawford, gold medal winners from the Houston area, authors, the museum district and others that weren’t well know but made an impact on our community.) Almost 7 years with Houston Center for Photography and now teaching photography.

Please tell us about your art.
People and their stories are my love, everyone has a great story to tell about their life and I love capturing that. Also, my travels, I love to do photo trips with students and to capture the beautiful places on this earth.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
You have to love what you do for sure. I may not be starving but there were many days I would hope money would come somehow and some way. Lots of prayer and hard work, the never give up attitude. I have said many times I would do photography without the money if I could but its unfortunate artists have to worry about the money coming in. Also, always thinking, I try to take an hour every day to try to think of something to bring money in. Have to be creative.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Facebook has been my showcase. It has allowed me to post my work and I also tell about the picture. I have started a blog www.capturinghouston.com where I try to show case Houston and tips about photography.
