Meet Joann Alvarez and Karla Dominguez of Mija Cultura

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joann Alvarez and Karla Dominguez.

Joann and Karla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
About two years ago, we began helping Joann’s fiancé sell Merch for their synth-pop band, Camera Cult. We slowly took an interest in the idea of actually starting a band together. Late December 2016, Karla’s brother who’s our graphic designer, 4TH LRGST, sat us down and we began to actually draw up some designs. We texted back and forth thinking of a name and Mija Cultura ended up sticking. March 2017 we finalized our logo design and opened up all our social media’s and website.

We were invited to have our first pop up at our favorite east end bar, Satellite Bar, for a Cinco De Mayo block party featuring Selena tribute artist Amanda Solis and Gio Chamba. We received so much positive feedback and slowly began to get bigger and bigger pop-up opportunists such as Madness on Main, Princess Nokia, SXSW Peligrosa House and Frida Friday. After our pop up at Yeah, Houston Parties! December 2017, We had a chance to work/meet journalist Paola Ramos who has now given us the opportunity to be featured on Telemundo. Our following has grown immensely in the last year, and we’re excited to see where we will be another year from now.

Has it been a smooth road?
We’d like to say it’s been a smooth road because we have such an amazing team behind Mija Cultura. The only struggle we’ve probably had is being such perfectionist and wanting to make sure we’re putting out something that represents us.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mija Cultura story. Tell us more about the business.
Mija Cultura is a Latina inspired clothing brand mixing our own upbringing, personalities and styles for inspiration. What we believe sets us apart is we created a brand that is more than just T-shirt’s and caps. When choosing our models we make sure to ask “how would YOU wear our clothing?” It can be as dressed down or up as you want.
