Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Quiroga.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a young boy growing up in the seventies, I had admired one of my uncles and his black and white photography. Then I was introduced to the works of Ansel Adams. I just fell in love with his work. I also had a love for all types of painting no matter what medium was used and no matter what era. I didn’t have much money growing up, but I remember my mom having a Polaroid camera which I used quite a bit. I had a bug now and then about 20 plus years ago, I started taking photos just for me. I broke a lot of rules of photography at some times but it led me to where I am today shooting full framed cameras with great lenses. When I used to shoot film, you couldn’t make mistakes but in this digital world, I get more room to explore. I don’t ever want to be Labeled as any one type of photographer. I have shot a wedding all around Texas, I have been blessed to have helped design Homes, A hospital, restaurants, and several other businesses. Even though I enjoy taking regular photos of people or businesses my passion is to create a painted picture or abstract work of art from my photography. I digitally paint, I also paint with different mediums like oils, acrylics, alcohol inks and dyes. I’m most proud of my work because some of it gets donated to different fundraisers a year and it helps people in need raise money for their cause.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have had a very successful go at photography and my art. I really can’t say I had any problems. I had some wonderful gallery owners named, Elaine and James Bangle who own Bangles art Gallery in Galveston who actually gave me my first show. As I hung my first exhibit 30 minutes before the show, 7 ladies walked in and bought my show. Then, I drove home and put together another show and it too sold out that night. I’m just flattered by all the wonderful friends I have met along the way who taught me to do my own thing explore and don’t always listen to every critic
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Joey 1967 Photography and Art -Strand Gallery-Q2 Gallery story. Tell us more about the business.
My company does a wide variety of things such as event photography. I am a freelance photographer for The Coast Magazine with The Galveston Daily News… I do wedding photography, bridal portraits, family pictures. Animal pictures such as Caine photography. I am also available to do vacation photography where family’s that are going on vacation can hire me to photography their treasured moments where no one is left out because they are taking the photographs. I sell art decor, from the pillow with my art to coasters to bookmarks to postcards.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
It’s definitely growing and with technology, it’s flooding the market with anyone who can press a button. It’s not a concern because the one you have to have an eye for photography and two it helps you stay fresh and raises you photography to higher levels. There are a lot of really great and up in coming photographers. That makes me happy to see their perspective and the beauty they see.
