Meet Jordan Parker and Aliyah Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Parker and Aliyah Thomas.

Jordan and Aliyah,  can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was always the curvy girl. The bigger friend and frankly. As a child, it was difficult to figure out exactly where I fit in. I think most women in America can agree – body image is a struggle. Luckily, I’ve always been confident and understood that this is the skin I’m in, and I need to be proud of it. I loved watching full-figured women like Queen Latifah, Monique, and Raven Symone’ flaunt their bodies with pride, and I wanted to be that person for someone else. I’ve always wanted to create a platform for plus size women to celebrate curves and different body styles that simply aren’t represented in mainstream media. One day at work, I expressed my passion for starting a podcast and YouTube channel with Jordan, and she agreed. We both had such similar struggles being a curvy girl from dating, shopping, health, and self-awareness. We decided that it was time to showcase different types of curvy girls and to give our community a stronger voice. It was so difficult coming up with a cute and catchy name, a nice play on words. One day while driving, Jordan called me and said, “When Life Gives You Curves,” and we’ve been working ever since.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been smooth, but it hasn’t been rough either. Jordan and I just work so well together. I often say she’s the brain, and I’m pinky LOL. We use our strengths together to truly make this podcast a success. Jordan does all of our media marketing, including social media, content, and editing the YouTube videos. I, on the other hand, come up with the social media verbiage, helping with content creation, and contacting women to be a part of our movement for segments such as #CurvyGirlOfTheWeek. With COVID-19 coming into play, it’s been challenging to create content, meet to film and simply get our minds off of staying in the house but we are doing it with a smile.

Tell us more about the business.
When life gives you curve is a visual podcast that provides women with curves a platform to come home to. Our mission is to represent full figured women of all shapes and sizes. Whether you consider yourself thick, chunky, fat, full-figured or plus-sized, we want you to be represented. On the show, we discuss everyday topics on our segment #What’sTheWord. We also bring awareness to the struggles that women with curves face daily such as dating, fashion, weight loss, and so much more. We often go on Instagram live to have a real talk with our viewers getting their perspective on life, dating, etc. This is one of our favorite interactions because it’s so candid! One thing we love to do on the show is our plus-sized fashion hauls. Because Jordan is an apple body shape and I am an hourglass shape, we find it extremely important to show how to dress your curves and feel confident in what you are wearing. We don’t have to be forced to wear stripes and floral prints any longer! What sets When life gives you curves apart from other podcasts, is that we are all about body positivity. Even if you aren’t the typical “curvy girl” or you don’t fit into the realm of being plus size, we are here to let you know you are perfect. We enjoy interacting with everyone because, at the end of the day, being your own biggest supporter is so essential, and we are here to help you get there.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We’re not lucky – we’re blessed! God said, “Write the vision, make it plain,” and that’s exactly what we did from the very beginning. We have received an overwhelming amount of support, and we launched only three months ago (February 2020). We have continued to grow our following by posting consistently and staying true to our platform. I don’t think luck has anything to do with it. We are merely walking in our calling. When we decided to do this, we knew it was bigger than us. We wanted to reach people and love on them, and when your heart is pure, you have no choice but to win.
