Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Cordel.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My entire life, I’ve known I wanted to be an artist and to sing. It’s been a passion of mine since I was a young child but now I’m actually pursuing it wholeheartedly. I come from a small town called Port Arthur, TX, a city filled with so many creative people but most feel stuck in sinking sand due to lack of support and resources. At times, I feel the same because I want something I don’t see anyone else achieving. My parents are regular hard-working middle-class Americans who choose to provide a life for their family instead of chasing their dreams. I, on the other hand, am struggling to fall in line because my dreams are too big to keep inside.
I grew up singing in the church which I love but always had a desire for more. Now after losing my entire life in Hurricane Harvey and having to start all over, I truly get to define who I want to be. I’ll admit it’s challenging balancing what everyone else wants for you and holding in all the things I want for myself, but I’m choosing to face my fears, chase my dreams, and just jump because I’ll never know what I’m truly capable of until I give it my all.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a singer, songwriter, dancer, actor, and model. I am very creative and love to turn ideas into reality. I started singing at 8, dancing since 12, begin writing at 14, and have begun learning producing and the keyboard. I always have thoughts and songs come to me, and it’s one of my favorite things to do. I love being inspired randomly and new fresh ideas coming from it. I make music because it’s my freedom, it’s how I express myself. It’s how I am able to be so confident because anything I don’t have the courage to say, I find the courage in singing. Writing has gotten me through some of the most painful times in my life, but it has also brought me the most joy. I love writing music that encourages people to keep going and makes the feel emotion. Life is hard, but the music makes it so much easier to bare. I hope that with my music, people can actually feel something and take a look within themselves to say, what is that holding me back, why am I not going for what makes me happy, what’s my dream, and how do I achieve it. Before the end of 2018, I’ll be releasing my first EP, and I hope it defines clearly who Jordan Cordel is. I’ve spent so many years in the dark and have allowed others to define me but now I get to say who I am and let the world know what this young man is capable of.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I feel as though a raw talent like myself has it harder when we have to keep up with people who don’t have the gifts and talent we do. Today’s world is about the hit single and with hip-hop taking over more and more, it’s hard for new singers to a have a voice. It is, however, refreshing to see a new influx of RnB singers coming into the scene. I pray for the moment I’ll be able to share my music on a major platform and stage. Even locally in Houston and the Golden Triangle, there is so much talent, but we have to start working together and stop thinking we have to do it all by ourselves. Teamwork makes the dream work, and it’s not about who is above you, it’s about who you have on the side of you working just as hard as you are.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Currently, I have music on Soundcloud and YouTube under Jordan Cordel, but before the year ends, I’ll be introducing my self-titled EP, Jordan Cordel on all major streaming platforms. Be sure to buy and stream that once it’s released, it’s something I’ve been working on for a while now and I’m so excited to share it.
