Meet Jordan Dubin of Dubin’s Fine Jewelry in Galleria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Dubin.

Jordan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2006, I graduated from The University of Texas with a degree in sociology and an uncertainty of where to go. While job interviewing, attending job fairs, and finding my way, I worked part-time at my father’s jewelry store. From day one, it felt like a natural fit. I always had an interest in design and engineering; I had the creative mindset for jewelry and marketing. My people skills were also there to communicate effectively with customers. Of course, there was a steep learning curve for gemology and jewelry production. To this day, I continue pushing myself to learn something new, whether it be a new gemstone, method of production, or just push the design envelope to something that has not been done.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Jumping into an already successful business has its perks. I have been able to take my Dad’s solid foundation and we have improved the business together. As a small business owner, there are always hurdles to overcome. With a luxury business such as jewelry, we have incredibly busy months followed by record-setting low months. It is tough to ride that roller coaster. When I came aboard in 2007, the computer was a small part of our business, social media did not exist, and Google Ads was in its infancy. With some resistance from my father, we slowly began evolving. He is old school, I was new school; that in itself presented some struggles. But it is also a great strength of ours as we balance each other out. My Dad is incredibly charming and talkative, he interacts wonderfully with our customers. But when a customer wants to see a rendering of a ring design in three different colors with three different shaped stones, I draw them up in the computer. Yin and yang at it’s finest!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Dubin’s Fine Jewelry – what should we know?
Dubin’s Fine Jewelry is a custom and fine jewelry boutique in the heart of Houston’s Galleria-area. Our specialty is in our ability to custom craft nearly any item in our store or of your imagination. We make the seemingly daunting undertaking of creating something a customer has never seen before and turning it into a modern heirloom. Engagement rings are one of our most popular customizable items. From selecting a center diamond (or other gemstone) to working with sample designs, creating a rough draft, holding a wax model of the design, and then delivering a masterpiece, we are with you every step of the way. Our team offers an intimate and personalized shopping experience. No quotas, commissions, or up-selling; our goal at the end of every day is a making a happy customer. Our showroom offers a selection of fine diamond, pearl and gemstone jewelry for all occasions. We have customers shopping for birthdays, push presents, anniversaries, and more. I am most proud of the company we are evolving into. With e-commerce, instant gratification, and a more mindful customer, our small size enables us to pivot quickly. Over the last year, we’ve introduced complimentary same day in-town delivery, text messaging including order and repair status, and an extensive website with online store and appointment booking. We are making efforts to be more eco-friendly. We partnered with Terrapass to help offset our carbon footprint, we urge our customers to upcycle their diamonds when available, and we are increasing our responsibly sourced and recycled efforts when sourcing new metal and gemstones.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Patience. Whether it be dealing with my dog barking for attention, breaking up the wrestling match between my kids, or a customer deciding on which item to purchase, patience is extremely valuable. From a personal perspective, it allows me the breathing room needed to decide how best to approach a situation. I can make the best decision and go forward. If that does not work, I will use patience to go back and try something else. Having patience in a sales and design role can be even more valuable to those I’m working with. Allowing my customer the time to process and not feel pressured into a decision increases everyone’s chances of success. Even though at today’s speed of life, success to many may seem as if it happens overnight, it most certainly does not. Success takes time and most importantly, success takes patience.
