Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Monet.
Hi Jordan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In regard to myself as an artist, I began playing with my musical talents at a young age. My entire family is full of musicians, so this was a given. Singing came to me as a one-year-old, teaching myself choreography took up most of my time at 5 years old, piano playing started around 6 years old, arranging music was a hobby of mine at 10 years old, acting was introduced to me at 17 years old, and now I aim to pursue all of these skills in some shape or fashion as a 20-year-old and beyond. I began dance training at local studios at the end of 2018 which shifted my creative focus to dancing and choreographing. Now, my love for music and performing is nourished through my journey as a professional dancer in the entertainment industry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It would be outrageous to say that it has been a smooth road. Everyone suffers from some sort of struggle; what truly matters is how you flip your situation. In the past, I struggled with major mental health issues. I’m sure 90% of anyone I’m around would have no idea of this if it weren’t for me publicizing this right now. I like to keep things like this private but for the sake of this interview, I think it’s important to lightly touch on the subject:
When you think of your future, you have to think about financial stability, longevity, or anything else that provides comfort when living in this society. I’ve always known that I am not built for a regular degular schmegular 9-to-5 job (even though we all know how flaky it is working in entertainment). The most difficult part was not comparing myself to people when I had just started training at 17. It’s the worst feeling trying to play catch-up. I would see other 17-year-olds teaching their own classes overseas, winning scholarships to conventions I had no idea existed, assisting in classes I couldn’t afford to attend, the list goes on. In life, I naturally excel everything I do. Dance was the first passion I really had to sit down and force myself to put in work for. Now it’s been about three years since I’ve started making my way in the Houston dance community. I finally feel like everything that I’ve prayed for and worked towards is starting to come to fruition. Patience is key. I truly believe in divine timing and loving your life – simply because it’s yours.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My skills include dancing, choreographing, freestyling, teaching, singing, playing the piano, musical arrangements, and acting. I specialize in dance and choreography – that’s truly where my heart lies. My favorite ways to connect with music, express myself, and exchange with those around me is through my movement. All three of those things are very very important to me. I am most known for my dedication, consistency, and individuality when it comes to dance. It’s easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing nowadays. With my yearning to be great as fast as possible, I naturally stay in my own lane and it’s safe to say people admire that.
I am most proud of signing with SEG Talent. My intuition led me to this opportunity. A long time friend of mine helped make it happen and I couldn’t be more thankful. She witnessed the very start of my journey and I reconnect with her every few months or so. I can already tell the agency feels like family and I can’t wait to start working with them!
There is a collection of attributes that sets me apart from others. Everyone is different in their own way. From the way I was raised, to my music taste, to the goals I set for my future – everything plays a role in what makes me who I am. Again, my originality stems from me wanting to be the best version of myself.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson that I’ve learned was actually something that I realized myself and continue to be reminded of. It’s so important to be intentional with your energy. Sometimes we get so caught up in everything that’s happening, we fail to realize how much control we actually have. You can choose to be happy. You can choose to be tired. You can choose to ignore your exhaustion. You can choose to rest in the middle of the process and be upset with the outcome. You can choose to work through your obstacles. Personally, I’ve made the decision to work hard, treat everyone kindly, and I don’t expect anything in return. No matter the destination, you are the creator of your own journey.
