Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Cano.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started traveling at 16 with my first trip to Colorado (thanks to my bboy crew ODA). In high school, I traveled about two states total. Arkansas, Colorado. I started breaking (b-boying) at that time, and that’s why I went over there besides snow! From then on, I fell in love with traveling and wanted to do it more. I could definitely say that because of that I have experiences that are very true to me and make me who I am today. I definitely feel that my path was seriously re-directed due to my own will and my best friends.. and I thank them for that. I went from studying Sociology to making beats and starting a record label instead, lol.
Please tell us about your art.
I produce and make beats. I used to sample through my SP-404SX and my MPC 2000XL. But now I’m mostly using Ableton for everything. Samplers allow you to make music the same way you use visual art with collaging. What speaks to me is that anyone can make art if you care and try enough. And I make beats to make them. I make about a beat a day but I’d say I take it with a grain of salt and enjoy it for what it is. Do what you want.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
No, I think it’s always been the same. To do whatever you want, and relate to people in the end. I have my own methodology for my art and way of living. And everyone has the option to do the same. Events affect us in different ways, so it’s hella important to be transparent with how you’re feeling as an artist in order to relate to whoever’s out there.
