Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Alvarez.
Joseph, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My path started when I attended a casting call at nine years old. I had something that they liked and got offered representation from a few different agencies. With the support of my family, I worked diligently with my agent and went on to win 9 IMTA awards in the New York competition in 2008. After, I lived in LA, California for a year meeting actors and agents while auditioning for various parts. I experienced Hollywood in the fullest. I did commercials here and there for the next few years and then in high school, I started creating original comedy with my production class. Although it was for the school, they gave myself and my peers a lot of freedom to be creative and unique. A small group of us made a short film that got chosen to play at SXSW. We were also featured on ABC 13 and KHOU. After high school, I began writing and rapping on my own with the sole purpose of making people laugh. My videos range from songs to sketches, and I’ve recently been working on some PSA’s. I now do videography for a Houston comedian and other video projects on the side. When I’m not working, I am executing new ideas and thinking of ways I can continue to evolve as an artist. Getting into production at nine years old showed me from a young age what I want to do with my life.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Desiring success in such a competitive field has been a challenge in itself, but the biggest obstacle I have faced yet is just staying positive. I’ll fail to get booked many times before I do. I create videos specifically so that other people will enjoy them, and that’s not always the case. It can easily feel like I’m not good enough, but maintaining self-worth, despite thriving on approval from others, is all I have to do.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am most known for what I create and I would consider myself a comedic actor. I’m an average guy living life so I really just make videos about the everyday things however, I don’t take myself too seriously so the outcomes are funny. I’m most proud of the feedback I’ve been given so far and knowing that I’ve made people laugh. What sets me apart from others is why I do what I do. There are a million things to be upset about daily so my passion comes from wanting to help people escape their stressors, even if it’s just temporary.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Thus far, I have made people laugh, and I continue to do so, but going forward I want to inspire people as well. I want to use my projects and platform to encourage people to be better to each other and the world around us, and overall happier. Long term, I plan to keep doing those things, but on a bigger scale by creating and starring in motion pictures.
