Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Cason.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The journey I feel has only just begun, and I’m enjoying the process in the world of cinema. However, one could say that this gift God gave me was in me ever since a child, it just had to be manifested. I have always found joy in playing with cameras and documenting great family moments, and everyday life through the eye of a young kid. In my mind, I was just taking pictures and recording video, but everything I was doing was setting me up for God’s plan for my life.
Growing up was a wild ride, and had its fair shares of ups and downs. High school really took me to a place that I never want to be at again in my life, but it did strengthen me and I learned many lessons from it. I would always get letters from The Art Institute of Houston, but I never knew why though. I had hardly any faith in myself, I was in a sunken place and I just want to stay in my little world that I was comfortable in. I thank God for placing me around the right people, good and bad because they all contributed to molding me into the person I am today. I owe most of my thanks to my immensely strong mother and father, Mary and Gregory Cason, for being there with me every step of the way. College was never a place I wanted to go, I felt I wasn’t smart enough, but my dad thought otherwise and made me enroll at The Art Institute of Houston.
Being college student wasn’t as bad as I made it out to be and I began to meet great friends and be able to connect with industry professionals and be granted professional opportunities within the film industry, that would truly inspire me to pursue filmmaking. The first ever big project I worked on was my 2nd quarter in college and it was on a feature film called Black Moth, a film by Manuel Moreno. He hates when we say his real name. This man has truly been a blessing to me and taught me so much about film and was the first person to open up my eyes to what I wanted to be, a Cinematographer.
As I enter production for my senior film Pneuma, I stand strong on the things that the strong and powerful Man and women of God Pastor Lajon Hawthorne and Apostle Jarmain Hawthorne, have spoken over my life, at True Ministries Chruch. These past few years have been crazy, yet filled with knowledge. My senior film has been a challenge in itself but you gotta enjoy the process and its been a wild one. This film is more than just as it appears and it really connected with me more and more as I was writing and putting tougher my production bible. Let me break it down real quick on how God worked on me through this film. The word Pneuma means, the vital spirit, soul, or creative force of a person. My girlfriend gave me this name for my film, without even knowing the details of the story. While sitting down with one of my producers, she showed me Ryan Coogler’s first short film called “locks.” At the time, I had locks, the short was about a man on his way to the barbershop, but along the way, everyone around him has locks but they are being harassed or doing drugs, etc. They are all black. When he gets to the shop, he ends up cut his hair, I won’t spoil the very end, I’ll let y’all go see it. This film hit me hard, almost bring me to tears because this story was how I felt. In order for me to become a new man, old things must die. I decided to cut my hair because I needed to be able to wake up in the morning and see a change in my life, to feel a change. I needed to renew my mind, body, soul, and spirit and I needed to become a New-Man. God has a funny way of working things out in your favor and he has been working in living life to this day.
Be on the lookout because PNEUMA is coming!
Has it been a smooth road?
I feel that if your road is smooth, then you should be more afraid than the person whose road is full of obstacles. No, my road hasn’t been smooth at all, but I know God can pull me out of any storm. I had many struggles both mentally and physically, I was in a consent fight with my mind. I had so much that I was wanting to do, so much I felt responsible for, so many people I wanted to help, that it began to tear me down. I was pouring out alot put but in the wrong direction. When you’re in a storm, things can become overwhelming and may feel that there is no way out but, just know the storm is only temporary and that greatness is on the other side. I had to understand that the struggles I was and am going through are not to tear me down but to build me up and take me higher than ever before.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Cason Media – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company is still under construction, but I’m branding my self right now. I am a freelance filmmaker, specializing in cinematography, photography, editing, and content creation. I know, mainly for my ability as a cinematographer. At this moment, I am pretty proud that I was given the opportunity to work with HTV on two projects on PSA and another being diversity in the city of Houston. I’m always learning and bettering myself in my craft. My style and taste for visual storytelling I feel are very unique to me, I have a drive for my craft, and I work at building a signature style that represents me. I don’t want to necessarily be apart formed others, I feel that the filmmaking community should really focus on teamwork and collaborations because no one man or women makes a film solo. I love collaborations and I believe it is fundamental in the industry.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how more diverse the city is, the fact that I have the ability to experience many different cultures in the comfort of your own city. I have a love-hate relationship with Houston though, I like how there is always something to do and something going on, but I hate the traffic here with a burning passion. I like the people, sometimes, I think we need to learn about some hospitality though, just saying. Overall, though I think it’s a good city.
