Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Lawrence.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in St. Francisville, Louisiana helping my dad fix any and everything. They owned a rental house and a trailer park. I always knew I wanted to do something with real estate because my parents made it look so easy. I tried going to a four-year college but I hated going to class and studying. After dropping out of college, I enrolled into a 2-year trade school for Instrument & Control Systems and never missed a day. The very next day after graduation I started working for a plant. I was making over $100,000 a year and would waste most of it on vehicles, partying, and shopping every weekend. There was this one coworker that everyone laughed at because he was so cheap and worked the most overtime for the company. I finally made my mind up to do the same thing. Before I purchased my first home, I wanted to build a small 4-unit apartment but my agent talked me out of it. When I purchased my first investment property in 2014 it was a 4-unit 4,000 sq. ft. rental for $100,000. The next year we purchased another four-plex for $33,000 and fixed it up for much of nothing. In 2017 my wife and I moved to Houston and tried to get back into renovations. The properties were so overpriced I end up meeting my mentor and he advised me to just build from the ground up because it was easier. It all started from there I would ride around all day asking questions and figuring out the steps to building houses.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My path to where I am now has been very easy and I think thats why I get so many calls about how did I do it in such a short amount of time. In the construction world everyone wants to get paid before finishing the work NEVER DO THAT!
Lawrence Builders – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Lawrence Builders builds new construction homes from the ground up. I can do it all from house design, getting the plans permitted, ordering material, preparing the site for construction, to closing with the buyers. I would say I’m known for my VERY VERY fast turnaround times. I’ve completed a house from start to finish in 78 days before. I’m proud of the extra details I provide in my homes compared to production builders. I’m different from other Texas builders because my homes are always unique. When I meet other local builders they always say, “so you’re the one that built that house on Higgins Street or Charleston Street”.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is being able to have visions and set goals to achieve them no matter what happens in your life. Staying on schedule and attention to detail is a major criteria for me. Being able to solve problems as they come but never get off schedule
