Meet Juan Alvarez of 54 Reasons in North Houston/Spring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Alvarez.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started the band in 2013 when I was a senior in high school. At the time, all of us we’re ambitious, but with time we grew up and the rest of the guys didn’t want to keep going with the band. I was alone with the project from February 2018 till March 2019. At the time I wanted to quit when the original drummer quit but I didn’t and recorded “Your Mother’s Favorite Band” and “A Cold Winter In April” by myself for the exception of the song “There’s No Way Out” when making that song Dalton had join a couple of weeks before. Eli recently joined a month ago which would be September 2019. Line up looks solid and well put. We got to were we are today but not giving up when we see nothing but disappointment. Like I said before when the original drummer quit in 2018, I felt like quitting cause no one had the same vision as me. But through all the disappointment, I kept going pursuing one of the only things I’ve loved dearly since I was a kid, which is my desire to make music and share it with the world.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No definitely not, the biggest struggles where members leaving. I started the band with a friend named Austin in 2013 back in high school. We went through a number of bassists, the first bassist didn’t work out for personal differences, second it was causing conflict with his other band, the third one didn’t have time so he chose his other band, the fourth one didn’t show up to rehearsal for two months, the fifth one is Dalton who is here to stay! By the time I met Dalton, Austin had quit. I was alone keeping the band running for a whole year finishing the EP “3 Hour Shower” by myself and recording “Your Mother’s Favorite Band” and “A Cold Winter In April” by myself for the exception of the song “There’s No Way Out”.

As for the drummer, my friend Austin was the original drummer and quit cause he didn’t want to keep playing music, second one moved to California, third one didn’t learn the material, fourth one moved to Colorado, the fifth one is Eli who is here to stay as well. Learned the songs in a week, not exaggerating at all.

Please tell us about 54 Reasons.
Our band plays Pop-Punk music similar to blink-182, Green Day, MxPx, NOFX, etc… We’re best known for our song “Oh Houston” at least one person in the crowd sings it when we play it live. I’d say the growth is definitely what I’m most proud of, we had our first out of state tour this past summer. From Texas all the way to California. Growing to the point, we have multiple CD’s and shirts for people to choose from when we’re on tour is great. I’ve seen this band grow from a high school blink-182 and Green Day cover band to an original well-established band. What sets us apart from other bands is our hard work, dedication and drive. We have to grow and better ourselves as musicians and people.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’d say good luck was when I found Dalton and Eli who are dedicated to the band. But I don’t really believe in luck in situations like these. I believe that everything happens for a reason and it is a lesson we should learn from. I learned so much from each past member and better myself, just in case I run into the same situation that may show potential in slowing down the band like past members have done before.
