Today we’d like to introduce you to Judy Tuttle-Wurth.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Judy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
3930 Ego
I started a career in the salon industry at the age of 18. I thought it would last a few years; that was more than three decades ago! I couldn’t ask for a more amazing career. It has given me the opportunity to travel, work on fashion shows and photo shoots, and help design product lines. This was all very exciting. After 37 years of doing hair, I decided to open a salon. It just seemed like the natural thing to do. I love the feeling of making clients feel good about themselves.
Urban Bicycle Gallery
In 2003, my husband Tom decided, after years of being in the bike industry, to open a bike shop. You would think this would be totally different than the beauty industry, but in many ways, it is the same. The relationships we built with our clients soon bonded us into amazing friendships. So what I had already experienced behind the chair also happened while riding bikes for endless miles on the city streets and long country roads.
At the time, we opened Urban Bicycle Gallery, I had been working in a salon for more than 20 years. I continued at the salon and helped Tom with marketing and events at the shop. UBG quickly built a community of cyclists together into one big family. Our UBG Team rides from the shop several days a week. We are also involved in many of the larger charity rides, our team has raised over a million dollars for the MS Society and several other charities.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In 2012, Tom died suddenly in an accident. At that time I quit my job to run the shop.
Trying to cope with the loss of my best friend and husband and quitting my job of 31 years was more than a struggle.
Only being on the marketing side of the shop I really didn’t know the day-to-day operations. I really didn’t know much about bikes except I like to ride. I had to rely on friends and employees to help me with orders, and running the shop.
With many ups and downs over the past five years life is at a place for me to get back into the salon world. November 2017, I opened a salon, 3930 Ego just a few minutes from Urban Bicycle Gallery.
Please tell us about 3930 Ego and The Urban Bicycle Gallery.
As for UBG I’m very proud to say that January 31 will be our 15th year anniversary. I like to say we specialize in experiences and adventures… we have everything from road, mountain, cross, and city bikes. I think every bike shop has its own vibe. UBG is pretty laid back; it’s more about the everyday rider with a few racers.
3930 Ego has been open for only a short time but it has been a dream of mine for years. I am very proud of the cozy space and look forward to hiring more stylists and doing beautiful hair. 3930 Ego is an open concept salon that rents out chairs to stylists. The Stylist can specialize in anything hair or make-up related. We also carry several lines of haircare; Orbie, R +Co and Davines.
Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business?
I’ve had endless support from family and friends for my entire career but especially the past 5 years. It would be impossible to name them all. I think that everyone I have worked with or worked for deserves some sort of credit. I was blessed to have a loving family and parents that instilled strong work ethics and friends that support me in my personal life as well as my career. I am blessed with a huge support group and I am truly thankful.
