Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Kirby Flores.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Julie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I always had a camera attached to me, from high school yearbook to taking my best friend’s engagement pictures in college. I never thought that it could really be a career, so I pursued my education degree and never looked back. Six years ago, one of my husband’s coworkers was getting married and had a tiny budget for a photographer. My husband mentioned how much his wife loved photography and the rest is history! That was the very first wedding I booked and I have worked hard to grow my business from there. It has been such an amazing journey.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a crazy road to get where I am. There are so many amazing photographers in the Houston area (many of whom I am lucky enough to call friends!), so the competition is steep. Finding my style and being confident in that was hard, but I am so thankful that I found that and stuck with it. Taking the leap of faith to quit my corporate job and become a full-time professional photographer was extremely hard, but I had a very supportive husband who helped me through it.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Julie Elisabeth Photography – what should we know?
I have been in business for a little over six years. I started out photographing anything I could and learned very quickly that my passion was in wedding photography. I’ve always been someone who has loved love, fairytales and romance. I just adore telling my client’s love stories. My clients become my friends, and I think that level of comfort that we have around each other lets me tell their love story even better. I’m known for my light and airy style and super fun and romantic sessions. I want my photos to be authentic, not heavily posed.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Oh gosh. I have been so lucky to have so many amazing people support me! My biggest cheerleader through this whole process has been my husband. He has been there encouraging me every step of the way and I couldn’t do this without his support and love! My precious daughters, Sophie and Emma, are who I do this for! Even though they are too young to understand now, I hope that I can teach them to follow their dreams and never give up on their passion.
My parents and family have also been amazing, from my Mom watching my girls when I have a session or a wedding, to my Dad sending me texts of encouragement and telling me how proud he is, they have been so wonderful!
Very early on in my career, I was lucky to attend an amazing workshop by a photographer that I have always loved, and looked up to! To this day, Kat has been such a great encouragement to me. I’m so thankful for the amazing vendor friends I’ve made in this business! As a wedding photographer, the connections you make with other vendors are the key!
Katie, Lauren, Jenna, Mariam, Jenn, Lisa, Christine, Brittney, and all of my HOF Tribe girls… they’ve all been amazing vendor friends and are so wonderful to work with. And of course my clients… I have so many wonderful clients who have stuck with me every step of the way, refer me to their friends and consistently trust me to document important times for their family… and I could not be more thankful for them.
