Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Navarro.
Karen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, I am from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I came to Houston in 2015. In Argentina, I used to work as a photographer for an online music electronic radio, but nothing serious. I also studied fashion design at The University of Buenos Aires. When I came to Houston I decided that I will start doing fashion photography, but after some time I felt that fashion photography didn’t fulfill me.
I didn’t want people to like my pictures just because there was a pretty girl in the images. I wanted to have a voice, I wanted that my pictures have a meaning. So then, is when I started to do fine art photography and portraiture. Now I am a full-time artist, and I’m working on multiple projects about female identity. You should check it out!!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an artist is hard. Basically, almost everything you do is self-generated. You are your own boss, which has its pro and cons. But without challenge, there is no satisfaction. Right?
My advice for people who are trying to make a living as an artist is, keep going, you are going get there! Work hard and keep learning the most you can.
Karen Navarro PH – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My photography work is known for the use of color theory and a soft approach with an ironic tone to serious matters.
In my work I explore themes related with identity, femininity and sexuality. In my latest project “A New Way of Beauty” I’m photographing women of all age, height, weight and race. This project looks to challenge the standards of beauty for women. As you know, I come from the fashion industry. So for me, this project is a new way of seeing beauty. The simple beauty presented in every person. Once I finish, I will be looking for venues to showcase this new work.
I spend most of my time at my studio working on current and new ideas. For next project, I am planing to work with the concept of identity as a foreigner, and how you “loose” your identity when constructing a new one while living in a foreigner county.
I welcome studio visits by appointments.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I don’t think I can pick one. Of course, that when I was named one of the 16 finalists at the Robert Giard Foundation award I felt and incredible excitement, or when I received a scholarship at Glassell School of Art, and also when my pictures were at Sephora website and store for the first time. But I am also proud of small thing that happens day to day. that keep me excited about what is coming.
