Meet Karla Richardson of HR Uncovered For You in West Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Richardson.

Karla, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, at the time of and during the Civil Rights Movement, my life is primarily influenced by the ongoing pursuit of civil rights equality for African-Americans. Although my father owned his business manufacturing GM car parts and my mother worked for Chrysler, by the time I graduated high school, the middle-class status our family enjoyed, eroded. Automotive manufacturing giants of the time, Ford, GM and Chrysler, moved nearly all of their manufacturing overseas. My father eventually lost his business, we lost our house and the City of Detroit that we bolstered, was systematically abandoned and dismantled.

By the time I started college, I was a single mother, having to work a full-time job to support myself and my son. It was during this time that I began a career in what was then known as ‘Personnel’ which transitioned to and became what we now know as ‘Human Resources’.

I worked as an Administrative Assistant in the Human Resource (HR) department of a top-tier corporate law firm in downtown Detroit. The experience of working in an environment where HR and Legal blended and complemented each other, was foundational to my career path. Since then, the only worked I’ve done, has been in the HR field.

I earned an English degree from Wayne State University and earned a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Administration from Central Michigan University. As an HR Practitioner, I minimize liability and mitigate risk for the employer while at the same time, attempt to advocate for the employee. ‘HR Uncovered For You’ allows me to focus solely on being an advocate for the employee. ‘HR Uncovered for You’ positions me to serve as an employment rights champion, dedicated to equal opportunity, workplace equity and anti-employment discrimination. My collective HR work experiences, education and training have culminated in my serving as an HR Equity Partner for working people.

Has it been a smooth road?
Earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees while working and parenting full time was not a simple endeavor. Fortunately, my Mother and Husband were my support system and ‘The Village’ that nurtured and looked after my son in the evenings when I was in class and studying after class. My faith in God lends itself to perseverance and overcoming. Albeit not smooth, the road I’ve traveled has been paved with the perseverance and strength of my ancestors and by God’s grace as He continues to lead me.

HR Uncovered For You – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
‘HR Uncovered For You’ is dedicated to the working class, workplace equity, equal opportunity, anti-employment discrimination and equipping the EMPLOYEE with an essential value-add: knowledge of core HR Principles and basic Employment Law that empowers and protects WORKERS on the job! No other HR consulting business model is focused solely on the employee. This difference sets me apart from every other consultant in the HR space.

Most gratifying is that my HR consult is offered as a $29.99 monthly Membership that is generally affordable, on average, costing only $1 a day.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The diversity of Houston is most inspirational to my HR work. I least like the disparities and inequities that minorities are subject to here in Houston and across the country.
