Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Lindsay.
Katie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was a dramatic child with an oversized imagination. My mom recognized that I desperately needed a creative outlet where I could express myself in a positive way. She enrolled me in my first acting class when I was seven years old, hoping it would teach me how to manage my big feelings. It was a game-changer that set the stage for the rest of my life.
Participating in theatre arts boosted my self-confidence and supercharged my social skills. It taught me how to become a positive team player and how to resolve conflicts. It taught me how to lead and how to follow. It taught me how to improvise and how to change creative direction when necessary. It provided me with a safe space to practice being human, build empathy and display my authentic self without fear of judgment.
I firmly believe that establishing a strong foundation in theatre from an early age significantly impacted my overall K-12 educational experience. It taught me how to think like an artist and how to approach new subject matter with confidence. I became comfortable with doubt, engaged more in class, asked more questions, and began generating new ideas with my peers. My once negative feelings about school were reshaped into a passion for learning and a determined growth mindset.
I developed Drama Rocket Theatre Arts Enrichment Program to complement existing fine arts education by providing young learners with a unique opportunity to participate in theatre enrichment on their very own school campus. Our ‘Drama Rocketeers’ love it because it’s a fun and creative outlet at the end of the school day, and it helps to build a stronger sense of school community. Teachers love it because it drives creative thinking skills, develops literacy skills and promotes teamwork. Parents love it because it supercharges self-confidence, boosts social skills and it’s a convenient and affordable enrichment activity their children can do on their own school campus.
My husband, Steven and I have called The Woodlands home since 2015. Both of our children are currently students in Conroe ISD. We understand the local education landscape and are invested in its future. I am a previous Senior Advertising Executive with a Theatre Degree from Auburn University and Steven is a Senior Sales Manager in the industrial chemicals market and holds a Master’s Degree in Chemistry from the University of South Carolina. The foundation of Drama Rocket is based on our combined professional experience, passion for theatre arts education and most importantly the joy and wonderment of raising our hilarious and creative children!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Launching Drama Rocket on school campuses requires the support of both parents and educators who see value in our program. I’m constantly building relationships with school administrators and families within our community to help inform them of Drama Rocket’s mission. This can be a slow-moving process or full steam ahead, so patience, perseverance and flexibility are key! Our crew is always on standby, ready to launch Drama Rocket on a new campus at any moment. I didn’t realize I had such strong problem solving and organization skills until I started this business! It’s been a challenging and thrilling mission so far, and I’d absolutely do it all over again!
Drama Rocket – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Drama Rocket serves onsite theatre arts enrichment classes and camps at preschools, elementary and intermediate schools in the Greater North Houston area including The Woodlands, Magnolia, Spring and beyond. The Drama Rocket Crew uses a process-based approach to teaching theatre arts to help students build self-confidence, develop stronger communication skills and make new friends on their very own campus! Parents enroll their children directly through our website, eliminating the hassle of paperwork for the school’s administrative staff. Drama Rocket classes are high energy and include hilarious theatre games and performance activities that our ‘Drama Rocketeers’ can share with their families! Drama Rocket also partners with like-minded child enrichment programs throughout the community including Nutty Scientists of Houston and Paint & Bubbles Art Studio to offer children one-of-a-kind combo camp experiences! Campers develop their own plays from start to finish, present their own science experiments in a performance format and design and create their own costumes, props and set pieces! Every camp experience is unique because it is created from the imaginations of our campers!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I suppose my criteria for success is finding meaning in everything that I do. Every day, our crew uses drama as a tool to teach children how to make intentional choices that will produce a positive outcome. I feel that the only way that I can share this philosophy with others is by demonstrating how to live my own life in the most authentic way possible. As an educator, I recognize that the relationships we build with our ‘Drama Rocketeers’ could make a lasting impression on their lives, and we want to invest in their future. As a local business owner, I give back to my community by offering a creative based enrichment program that helps equip children with the social and emotional skills necessary to succeed in whatever career path they choose. As a mom, it’s my mission to raise my children to understand the value of hard work, the importance of living out an authentic life and how a servant’s heart can bring joy and compassion to the world.
