Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall Hebert.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always wanted to be writer. I grew up filling up my journals with stories and wanted to pursue journalism for as long as I can remember — writing was something that always came naturally to me. In 2010, I interned at a small newspaper in college and saw how drastically newsrooms were being slashed. I decided it wouldn’t be a bad idea to expand my skillset as a backup plan. I took every internship I could and by the time I graduated, I had gained experience in branding, communications, media relations, marketing, public relations and public affairs. I realized that even though traditional journalism careers were harder to come by, every industry had a huge need for strong writers and communicators.
After college, I began working for PR agencies and carved out a role for myself as a content expert. I would write everything — from white papers, eBooks, magazine articles to news stories, press releases, blog posts and social media content. While I loved telling stories for clients, I also craved an outlet where I could express my personal passions and tell my own story. I launched a style blog as a side hustle, which actually made me better at my day job. I would pitch and collaborate with influencers for my clients’ campaigns and gained perspective on the other side of the industry as an influencer myself.
Drawing on all of my experience working across industries and content platforms, I launched my freelance business one year ago. I love the entrepreneurial spirit and freedom that freelancing provides, and I work with people and companies that inspire me and target audiences in a real and powerful way.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing worth doing is ever easy, right? Some of my professional struggles sparked my desire to pursue freelancing. And while being your own boss and having the flexibility to build your own client base is exciting, there are also drawbacks. As a freelancer, I struggle most with the balance between executing client work and marketing my business. At times, I can get so invested in a project or organization’s mission, that it can be difficult to stay within the confines of the scope of work. It can be difficult to balance the creativity needed to execute work and provide value with big-picture business perspective.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a freelance writer and content creator helping organizations tell their stories through editorial writing, social media strategy, branding and content marketing. It’s an honor to craft stories in a way that will resonate with people, and I love the creating brand messaging and communications strategies that enhance my clients’ missions and objectives.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Seeing a huge shift in traditional news journalism early on in my career, I’ve worked hard to adapt to new technologies, mediums and channels. That being said, the need for strong communication, branding and storytelling isn’t going anywhere as it’s the most effective way to informing and connect with target audiences. I believe companies will continue to put more efforts in these areas in the next 5-10 years.
