Meet Kenneth Hudson of Kenneth Hudson Photography in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Hudson.

Kenneth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After earning a degree in Communications from the University of Texas, I held staff photographer and film cameraman positions at NASA and Brown & Root (Halliburton). Later, I worked as a freelance photographer and owned a video production company.

When analog video started to be replaced by digital media, I decided it was a good time to sell my company. For the next several years, I worked in advertising and marketing. Then, in 2008, I re-discovered digital photography. I had previously studied digital Mars images, probably the first digital photographs ever, while working at NASA. At the time, it seemed that digital photography would not be practical for the average photographer until the distant future. Well, the future had arrived! It was obvious, digital photography had finally developed to a technical quality level that was comparable to film, and had many other immense advantages!

In 2012, I opened a studio in downtown Houston. I have displayed my work at ten Bayou City Art Festivals, six Houston ArtCrawl events, The Houston Club and many other venues. I have major installations at the Hilton Midtown Hotel in Manhattan, the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Downtown Houston and various Houston corporate offices.

As an independent Houston-based photographer, I enjoy freelance commissions, portraiture, and creating photographic art. Every assignment is a chance to transform a scene or person into a dazzling photographic image.

My studio is located at Hardy & Nance Studios in the ‘old warehouse art district’ in downtown Houston, Texas. The building houses several artists and photographers that work separately, but join together for special events. One of my recent major projects involved large Metal prints over six feet across for the corporate offices of a Houston based Energy Company.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Pursuing a creative career, while trying to provide ‘the good life’ for a young family, can be a huge challenge. Luckily, I always had lots of help and support from my great family, especially my wife Chung. Our children were always a joy, and never a problem.

Nevertheless, at a certain point, the roller coaster ride seemed more than I wanted to handle. So, for a number of years, photography and other creative endeavors were put on the back burner, as I toiled in the business world. Eventually, everything worked out well. For the last ten years, I’ve been doing what I was meant to do and love, while my adult children have achieved fantastic careers.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kenneth Hudson Photography – what should we know?
As an independent Houston-based photographer, I have the ability to tackle any assignment, anywhere in the world.

What do you specialize in?

My focus over the last 10 years has been photographic wall art. These works can be from my own catalog or by commission.

Furthermore, having a long industrial and business photography background, I have experience in most types of photography. Clients know I’m comfortable in an industrial environment, able to adapt to unforeseen circumstances and familiar with business protocols.

Finally, my studio is not only a gallery, but also geared for fine art portrait photography. Plus, I have the capability to shoot portraits on location.

What are you known for, etc.?

Over the last five years, my vibrant and distinctive images of Houston, Texas have been my most popular work. Naturally, I have a diverse catalog that includes many other places and peoples. My images are usually presented as stunning MetalPrints™ (dye-Infused aluminum). Unlike conventional photographs, MetalPrints™ do not fade or discolor over time and do not require glass or custom framing. Of course, my clients are free to choose any medium they prefer including: framed, stand out, canvas, glass or acrylic.

What are you most proud of as a company?

The strong demand for my photographic art and services is what makes my business exciting! I enjoy meeting people at our studio gallery shows, local festivals, and special events.

• 2012 – 2018: Artist in Residence at Hardy & Nance Studios (Studio 20 ). Annual Houston ArtCrawl participant.
• 2013 – 2018: Bayou City Art Festival – Houston, Texas. Invited artist at the semi-annual, international weekend art exhibition.

Obviously, over the next couple of years, I plan to establish a more robust online presence.

What sets you apart from others?

Frankly, every photographer or artist strives to have a unique vision, setting them apart from others. In my case, vibrant imagery is not limited by the camera. Mastery of modern digital techniques and software allows me to recreate photographs as visualized through the mind’s eye, not just a photographic lens.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My lovely wife Chung who is always there with love, help, and support. The many good folks that have volunteered to help me with my booth at festivals over the past years. My friends, fellow artists and Don Tucker, the man and legend behind Hardy & Nance Studios.
