Meet Kevin McGee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin McGee.

Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been in love with music since a child. Just knowing all the lyrics to songs on the radio to freestyling with close friends in school. I began recording in high school and just fell in love with the process more and more. Once I began college I moved to San Antonio, and that’s really when I had to step out on my own and learn more about the business.

Since then I’ve been studying the music industry and continuously working to climb the ladder. Now, I’m at a point of where I’ve learned a lot about being an independent artist and what it takes to succeed. It’s all a process, and with the new music, I’m definitely implementing everything I’ve done from performances to tours, marketing, recording, etc.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely been a rollercoaster ride. There are great times when you’re having fun, traveling, opening for big artist, and really growing as an artist. Then there are times when real life just sets in. Still working a 9-5, having to struggle with paying your bills, then not being able to thoroughly invest in your career. Having setbacks when you’re finally getting things rolling. Friends, family, and people you started with don’t always stick around through the tough times so that can be frustrating as well. It can be a tough journey, but the wins always make it worth it.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Well I’m a hip hop artist, songwriter, producer, and just a creative all around. I’m an entrepreneur and a businessman in the making, but I specialize in music and writing. I love creating and composing music so that has always been my first passion. Some of the things I’m most proud of are some of the shows I’ve performed for and just learning so much on my own. I’ve opened for artist like Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, Wale, Currensy, and many more. I’ve been able to travel and meet so many cool and amazing people, and it’s only the beginning. I think what sets me apart is I’m able to look past just the music and see everything else that can be done. I’m learning to DJ, I curate a playlist titled Vibes Only, I plan and market these different creative outlets, I manage, I just do it all. Being independent shows you how much work is needed to achieve these goals and dreams, and when you’re doing it on your own you start to learn all parts of the business which is major plus. It also opens the mind to ownership and creating more businesses like venues, real estate, food & beverage, books, and all kinds of great ways to express yourself and grow your business.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I think my favorite memory from childhood was always rapping and freestyling with my friends wherever we would go. We would be down the street playing basketball then just head inside and rap for hours. Or riding to those away games on the bus during basketball season, at the lunch table during school, all those random times. It was fun to showcase your skills and get praise for something you’re good at.
