Meet Khanh Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khanh Nguyen.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My journey to photography starts during my high school year. My dad gave me my first digital camera when I was about 15 years old. I like to document daily life during my high school year and became the yearbook photographer. Fast forward through college, I saved enough money to buy a DSLR and began to explore all the possibilities of photography. At the time, off-camera flash is the new thing, so it caught my interest in learning how to use light. I and a group of friends began to organize photo walks, portrait sessions, automotive and we all grew from there. A few of us from the group became professional photographers after that. I never thought I would start my career as a wedding photographer until a friend asked me to photograph his sister’s wedding. I have never photographed a wedding before, so I decided to give it a shot. From that point on, I started the second shoot for many photographers and strengthened my skills and experience as a photographer.

After I graduated from the University of Houston with a restaurant management degree, I decided to find a restaurant job that suitable for me. I started off as a restaurant server and realized that this is not something that I wanted to do. Deep down in my mind, my passion is photography so I decided to quit my job and set out to find mentors that will show me the way.

The journey to photography only gets much more interesting from there. I met a lot of great photographers through conferences, inspired by them and learned a lot from them. Through many trials and errors, my photography business starts to grow with great support from my clients, friends, and family.

Please tell us about your art.
My wedding photography is described as moody, momentous and sincere. To me, a great image from a wedding should be about the moments between the couples and their family. It took me a while to learn what I like to shoot. I like to document weddings the way that it tells a unique story to each couple. I like the emotions that unfold throughout the wedding day and the unexpected moments. Besides the moments, I always try to find light and composition for creative portraits. After all, I want my photographs to stand the test of time and bring happiness to my couples every time when they look through their album.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I think with social media we get a lot of connection online but not in person. It’s best to invite a fellow photographer to meet up/lunch and network with them.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My wedding work can be seen at www.khanhnguyenphotography.com. I started two other brands that cater to family and senior portraiture www.knportrait.com and boudoir photography www.knboudoir.com.
