Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Lloyd.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always loved art. Growing up, I was always making and creating art. Whether it was messy or clean, getting my hands on anything creative brought a smile to my face. I loved drawing, painting, sculpting, and photography. Through my early formal education, I realized that art was not only my passion, but would be my calling in life. I graduated from Texas Tech with a Bachelors of Fine Arts and a teaching certification and since then, I have been an art and yearbook teacher in Cypress Fairbanks ISD for over 15 years.
My photography journey really began when I first started as a yearbook teacher. It wasn’t until about 3 years ago that I started taking more photos beyond school candid and basketball game shots. I went out with my older daughter, Hailey, to take some bluebonnet pictures with her friend and mother. I just started taking pictures, and I enjoyed the creativity it gave me.
I repeat this same feeling each time when I photograph my two daughters Hailey, age 10, and Brooklyn, age 4, today, or any of the wonderful clients with whom I have the privilege to photograph and share special photographic essays. I started taking family and friend pictures for free to build my portfolio slowly, and then I was hooked. With the help of my friends and word of mouth, my business exploded and the rest is history.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Most definitely not. I don’t know what business has a smooth road. I have always had a pretty creative eye, but the business side has been a learning curve for me. Being a creative person, I feel very passionately about my art and sometimes I take the criticism personally, but realize now it has strengthened me by paying closer attention to small details. Also, marketing and just the financial side (especially tax-time) of growing your own business can be challenging as well.
Also, I have to balance between a full- time teaching career, raising my two daughters, keeping a happy marriage, and growing a successful photography business as each facet of life has its own challenges. But with those obstacles, comes a great deal of appreciation and love for my family, fellow teachers, and clients who help keep my balancing act going. It has definitely been such an amazing road for me to travel each day.
Please tell us about New Blue Eyes Photography.
The origin of the company name: Yes, I have blue eyes. And yes, both my daughters have blue eyes. I felt that “new blue eyes” not “old blue eyes” was more appropriate since my children see the world from a different perspective which gives me a chance to see things in a new way.
New Blue Eyes Photography provides professional high school senior/family services in the Cypress/Tomball area. I value life-long relationships with my clients and strive to capture fun, timeless, and indelible memories for them. I am a one-stop shop. After meaningful communication with my clients, I plan, stage, coordinate and execute photographic shoots in outdoor settings and then edit and provide photographic arrays for the client’s ultimate selection and approval.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing. I think experiences define and grow a person and make them stronger. Not being a risk taker, I feel I have grown so much from learning to manage my own business and learning the craft of photography and fine-tune editing and interaction with clients.
Since starting this journey, I cannot believe the growth I have had over these last three years. I could not be happier and more blessed than allowing my artistic creativity and talent as a photographer be channeled in helping all clients I have the privilege of working with.
