Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Moore.
Kimberly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hair has always been a passion of mine since a young child but when I moved from California to Mississippi things changed. At the age of 14, I was sent to stay with my father and since it was only the two of us, I was forced to take care of my crown myself. I was ok with that because I always knew how to braid and eventually became good friends with someone who didn’t mind teaching me.
As I became older, my love for hair always grew and luckily, I was good at it because I saved a lot of money doing it myself. At 21, I started working with troubled teenage boys in a group home when I moved back to California. I thought that was my calling because I excelled at the job but hair was my passion. I worked with the company for about 8 to nine years all while doing hair on the side.
Over the years, I had children and got married. I always wanted to enroll in cosmetology but it never fit with my schedule since it was a full-time program. When my family and I made the decision to move to Texas, I was determined to follow my passion and make it my career. When my children were old enough to attend school for a full day, I enrolled and here I am today. I came in the game as a hair braider and now I like to consider myself a weaveologist lol. Please don’t misunderstand, I am a hairdresser but I love weaving and making wigs. My motto is “No humps No lumps” and “Wear the wig, don’t let it wear you”.
I love taking something that isn’t theirs and making it look like it is. People shouldn’t look at you and know its a weave, it should look like it’s coming out of your scalp. I just like to keep them guessing. Here I am 36 today finally walking in my truth. I have been licensed now for about five years.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road but it hasn’t been too rough either. As a hairstylist, you have your ups and your downs. Sometimes you have people who don’t show up for there appointment, people who try to talk you down on your prices, and sometimes you just can’t make everyone happy. That’s why finding a system that works for you is very important.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Kim’s Hands is my business name and yes these hands are heavenly blessed, lol. I do natural hair, braids, sew ins, hair color, crochet, and make wigs. I would say I’m mostly known for my weaving and my wig making is on the rise. I’m most proud that I get paid to do what I love and I’m growing. One thing I feel that might help set me apart from others is I don’t double book and I’m very personable with my clients. I’m fast and don’t keep my clients in the chair all day and last but not least, I’m on time if not, I will take money off.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is one of the best spots for my type of business, I would recommend anyone coming to Houston to start off as long as they have tough skin. It’s not an occupation for the weak, you have to stay strong and keep pushing.
