Meet King Kanja

Today we’d like to introduce you to King Kanja. Them and their team share their story with us below:

KING KANJA is one of the most sought-after iconic award-winning international recording artists in the world. Born in London to a Kenyan family and raised in the Silver Spring, MD area, KING KANJA broke out into the music industry after a record-breaking performance on B.E.T’s legendary “106 and Park” in 2009 with over 70% of the votes from over 4 million viewers around the world! His style is often categorized as world music with a blend of hip hop, R&B, reggae and African polyrhythms. He currently resides in Los Angeles, CA but regularly travels to London and Kenya. He was also nominated at the 2017 AFRIMMA awards in Dallas, Texas for the “Crossing Boundaries with Music” award alongside international acts Wale, Wizkid, Maleek Berry, French Montana & Jidenna. Over the years, he’s played at South by Southwest, starred in a Coca-Cola ad and become especially legendary in Kenya, in part because he often drops Kikuyu and Swahili into his lyrics. He has performed all over the world from his native country Kenya for President Uhuru Kenyatta during his final election rally for his second term in Uhuru Park for a 100,000 people to the legendary Glastonbury festival in England at the stage next to Kanye West. He has also received the icon award from the Kenyan ambassador to the U.S Robinson Njeru Githae on Jamhuri Day (Kenya Independence Day) & performed numerous times in Washington D.C. including the prestigious John F. Kennedy Center with the Music in Me Foundation International.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road, if anything a roller coaster of a ride. It has its ups and downs. There were a lot of struggles, especially relationships along the way. Persistence and consistency are a necessity in this journey. Also having faith, without faith when times get hard you have nothing to fall back on

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
King Kanja throughout the years has acquired a high level of music business IQ which led him to being asked by Mathew Knowles (Beyoncé and Solange’s father) to be the president of the Afrobeats division of his world renowned record label, Music World Entertainment, former home of Grammy-winning Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé and other major artists. Things didn’t work out as shortly after Dr. Knowles had fallen ill and led King Kanja to continue running his label imprint, King Kanja Empire with distribution from Empire working with a variety of music icons along with debuting brand new talent across the world.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Humility and patience will always keep you on your journey forever. I also learned most people are a product of their environment which leads them to act or respond in a certain way depending on the circumstance or situation.
