Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Rabb.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Laura. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been laughing to myself since I was little. Really creepy actually, a little girl staring into space and then spontaneously erupting in laughter. Now I just write it down. I still stare into space, but now with a pencil to scratch down the friendly creatures just out of sight. This first year of making comics has brought blessing in ways I did not expect. Loving support from my friends & family will continue to drive me to make more.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
“Do what you love, & you’ll never work a day,” has consequences. You make something you love, and present it to the world, any criticism is going to slice straight into you. Because that’s your brainchild, something you brought into being. Criticism is necessary & welcome, but this first year has had a lesson for me in separating myself from my projects.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I make comics, they’re odes to the specific & universal. Loving the weird, eccentric, and unique has made me realize: what makes my comics special is I’m me. Like so many others, I am unique to myself, and in this way, all of us are similar in the end. Our similarities, absurdities, & humor unite us, we’re all alive together, responsible for each other. I believe these experiences should encourage compassion- as, after all, humans aren’t so different from each other.
What were you like growing up?
My mother says I was extremely curious. I had an extensive bug collection, read anatomy books to look at all the peeled men, made little animations on a Nintendo DS & did not mind being alone. My family embraced & encouraged my eccentricities. I could not imagine thriving without them.
