Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Zinn.
Lauren, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started taking photos when my dad gave me my first digital camera when I was 15 years old. Ever since then, it just blossomed into a hobby I just loved doing. I began to realize I was capturing moments with just a click of a button and I didn’t want to stop. My dad is the one who inspires me to capture those moments and to improve on my art. Especially when he himself captures these beautiful photos of animals and gorgeous landscapes.
I took more of interest in portraits and how people interacted with one another. Before creating my business, I started out taking photos of people whenever I brought my camera along. I took photos of bloggers, friends, family, historical reenactments and even sporting events. I felt like I should capture it all because I wanted to remember it all. But then I slowly realized that to improve in my art, I had to narrow things down. Thankfully I had fellow photographers, including my dad, help me realize this. So I decided to go back to what I love doing and that’s taking photos of families and their special moments.
In 2016, I started to turn my love for photography into a business. People were already starting to pay me for photos so I thought why not do things right and do it professionally. That’s when Zinn Photography was born.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely was not a smooth road. At the time I started my business in 2016, I was back in school for my second degree. I was attending night classes while also working full time as an accountant. The business was slow at first because I could only market when I wasn’t studying, writing papers, or working on stressful deadlines at my full-time job. I wasn’t scheduling things correctly because trying to do sessions around my personal life. That ended up horribly because I had no time to spend with my husband. I was trying to do so much for so little and soon felt like it wasn’t worth it.
Now, I’m scheduling things better, there are days in the week when I literally have to plan for some me-time. To be able to still love what I do, I had to make times on my schedule to relax and smell the roses.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Zinn Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in family and children photography. I love capturing the beginning moments of a family, starting with maternity or newborn. Then growing up with them and capturing their special milestones.
I’m a natural light photographer, so I don’t really use a studio unless absolutely necessary. So I often do newborn photography in my client’s homes where they will feel the most comfortable versus having to drive to the studio. That’s not to say I don’t offer studio sessions, that is an option. I just enjoy taking photos of my clients, where they will feel the most comfortable. Especially when you can tell those sorts of things in a photograph.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see my self in 5-10 years either continuing doing this part-time or eventually doing it full time.
