Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Perez.
Houstonian Laurie Perez is a creative nerd, mad artist, design geek and founder of Laurie Perez Photography. In 2004, a devastating house fire left her family with only the clothes on their backs and a canon film camera. Making the best of the situation, she enrolled in a photography course. It was in the darkroom where she found her deep passion for the art. Motivated by students and staff to open a business, in 2006, Laurie Perez Photography was born. Wanting to continue her education, in 2009, she received a Cum Laude Bachelors of Arts in Communication at University of Houston- Clear Lake. Currently, Laurie Perez Photography is sought out for her creative Commercial Photography and gets to work her magic with Interior designers, ad agencies, magazines, publishing companies, politicians, celebrities and TV shows. However, she is known to photograph an occasional wedding. In her spare time, she does creative art photography or can be found mentoring photographers.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not always been smooth. Starting up a Houston Photography company during the economic recession was the biggest hurdle, but if we survived that challenge we knew we had a good thing.
Our initial clientele was Commercial Photography and Business Marketing in Houston. However, Houston weddings were more in demand and we took that detour. We have since circled back to our original clientele focusing more on commercial work. Now, in the midst of the quarantine, we have learned to pivot again by implementing safe ways to continue to photograph commercial and interior projects.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Laurie Perez Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
We love helping companies and individuals deliver a successful visual message. With our attention to detail, lighting, and art direction we promise we can set clients apart from their competition. We know how nerve-wracking it can be to get photographed, but we have a way of putting clients at ease so they look their best. Although Laurie Perez Photography specializes in Commercial Photography, individuals will often hire us to obtain editorial style portraits.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We are firm believers in hard work equals reward. Perseverance and sweat have played bigger roles in the business than luck. Our advice in this uncertain time would be to cultivate your passion and learn to pivot.
