Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Garcia.
Lindsey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My parents always had film cameras, so I started taking pictures with film cameras when I was about seven. When I turned eleven, I got a point and shoot camera and I started off by taking pictures of nature and plants and family events. I never took photography seriously until I turned seventeen and I got my first DSLR camera. Even then, I was still a shy young adult, so I would practice taking pictures of myself, friends, food or anything that captured my attention. Later on, I started to work on it more seriously and I really loved how I was meeting a lot of great people I can call friends. Photography has helped me with my social anxiety and also to just take pictures of what I want. I really love the one on one I get with the model and also how I am able to show others what I see. I love the intimacy I get with my model because I learn a lot from them.
Has it been a smooth road?
Yes and no. Starting off was somewhat of a struggle. When I started, I had no idea how to do photography. I never took a class for it, so I read a lot and just tried it. I hated talking to people or even pulling my camera out because I felt so discouraged that I wasn’t good enough to do it. I kept comparing myself to other people and it made me very sad. Eventually, I learned that I can’t do that because if I do, I will not grow as an artist or even as an individual. There were some people who also said I wasn’t good enough and I think those negative comments pushed me to work harder and be more creative with my shoots. Photography also can get very expensive, so I was discouraged when I saw “better photographers” has certain equipment. I, later on, realized you don’t really need fancy equipment to take a great photo. I think it’s all trial and error. I’m still learning every day on how to improve. I’m just happy this isn’t something I’ve given up on.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a freelance photographer. I love meeting and working with new people. I’ll do anything from just a portrait shoot and headshots to senior portraits, modeling portfolios, and everything in between.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how diverse we are as a city, but I hate how everything is so far away.
