Meet Lisa Clark of Counter to Curb Composting in The Woodlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Clark.

Lisa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Our family had been composting in our backyard for quite some time and began composting and friends and family’s food waste. My husband and I have a very entrepreneurial spirit and noticed the lack of curbside composting services in The Woodlands when many major cities in Texas have this service already. We piloted the idea with our family and friends and kick-started Counter to Curb Composting soon after. We now offer residential and business curbside composting every other week with a compost give back program twice a year.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We are new company and currently trying to grow and market correctly in our area. Currently, our main focus and largest obstacle is to educate the community on the importance of composting. We live in an area of Houston that has focused so much energy into preserving The Woodlands as a natural and wooded environment. Many homeowners in our community value the beauty of The Woodlands and want to learn how to sustain it. And in this case, the best scenario would be for every homeowner to compost their food waste and replenish their property with organic, compost material. Our company is here to educate and help the community sustain the true nature of The Woodlands as well as reduce landfill waste.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Counter to Curb Composting story. Tell us more about the business.
Counter to Curb Composting is a family ran business based out of The Woodlands, Texas on the north side of Houston. The beauty and natural landscape in our community is what sets our community apart from most of the Houston area.

We specialize in curbside composting services. Our customers fill up their bucket with their food scraps from their kitchen counter and then place it on the curb every other week. We pick up the buckets and replace them with new, sanitized buckets. The intent is to make composting as simple as throwing out the trash. Instead of their trash can, our customers place their compost materials in their bucket and place it on the curb similar to their trash bins, but on a different day.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
So far, we have been very fortunate to have The Woodlands Township back our efforts in a sustainable lifestyle choice. The local township recently hosted a 3R Bazaar which they invited us to educate the community of ways to recycle, reduce and reuse.

The Township has been extremely supportive in our efforts to bring a composting service to the residents in our area.
