Meet Logan Fairchild of Lu’s Barbershop in South Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Fairchild.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Logan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always knew I wanted to have a career that allows me to be creative. I just wasn’t sure what. I went to college for two years for art history but soon realized college was not my thing. At 20 years old, I enrolled in a cosmetology school in Amarillo, TX. I did women’s hair for two years and decided that wasn’t quite my thing. I then found a help wanted ad on Craigslist for a one chair barbershop at a Petro truck stop, so I went to work out there teaching myself how to cut men’s hair. After a while, I felt confident enough to move shops. Then four years ago, I moved to Houston, and I have been working at Lu’s for about six months.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Growing up in a very small farming community, I never really thought I would make it out of the Texas Panhandle. I never imagined I would be in the country’s fourth largest city, doing what I love. Taking the leap to move here was scary and very difficult. Also, I have always had pretty wicked depression and anxiety, so those tend to make life in general difficult. There have been countless nights in the last 8-9 years that I’ve laid in bed awake at night thinking about a haircut I messed up, or something wasn’t quite right with a cut. Being a female in a male dominated field has its own challenges, as well. I have to work harder and cut better than my male counterparts to be taken seriously. It can be very exhausting, but it is 100% worth it because I get to do what I love every day.

Please tell us about your business.
I am the assistant manager at Lu’s Barbershop in Clear Lake. We are known for having that classic old school barbershop feel. At Lu’s we do our very best to go above and beyond for our clients to make sure they have the best service every time. We believe it’s the little things, like a hot lather neck shave to finish service, that makes a difference and set us apart.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would be every summer my family spent camping in the New Mexico mountains for two weeks. It was the only trip we would take all year. My family farmed when I was growing up, so it was hard for us to getaway. I loved going to the mountains. My siblings and I would spend the days hiking and swimming in the river. We so cared free. I miss it.
