Meet Luis Segura

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Segura.

Hi Luis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Luis Segura and I was born in McAllen, located in South Texas, near the US-Mexican border. Growing up in a border town, I had always envisioned myself living in a big city. On my last day in my hometown before moving to Houston, I was scared to take that leap of faith, but I still took it anyway. It was a turning point in my life because I wanted my friends and family to know that it’s okay to dream big. Whether you are afraid to take that chance, it is best to open that door of uncertainty and show the world who you are than to leave that door shut.

Hungry for growth, I needed to find a way to grow my potential by dreaming big and through retrospective thinking, my target goal was to attend a prestigious university, and Rice came to mind. I fought endlessly for a seat at the class of 2023 and in the Summer of 2021, I received a letter that I was accepted at Rice University, the Harvard of the South. I am currently pursuing my Master’s where I hope to grow as a leader and inspire others to follow their paths with passion during the midst of their struggles.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not one bit. Every step that you progress along the way, always expect obstacles. These obstacles test your character and it is up to you to control your emotions and fight back to overcome them.

Coming from a small-town, I moved to Houston at 2017 during Hurricane Harvey and I was asked to evacuate the area. When the hurricane cleared, I began my journey in Houston delivering flowers. I then worked at a storage company moving boxes for a hoarder’s home at $12 an hour. My next job I worked at a warehouse, loading trucks and opening crates that came from overseas while stocking inventory.

My humble beginnings gave me the strength to dream big as I later secured a position in business, particularly in Logistics and Procurement. I climbed the corporate ladder and later realized that it was not enough. From delivering flowers to moving boxes to loading trucks to now attending the best university in Texas, I am grateful for my struggles because they allowed for me to sharpen my mind and become the best version I can be.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Logistics Specialist for an Oil and Gas distributor in the downstream service. I specialize in Freight Analytics as I strive for On-Time Delivery and minimizing operational expenses. I schedule pick-ups with transportation companies, intercept shipments, and communicate with Freight forwarders in delivering goods overseas. I am most proud of leading a project where I was required to educate others on how to utilize a warehouse management system for systematically shipping an order. What sets me apart from others is that I never feel entitled by saying “that’s not my job”. If the job needs to get done before a deadline, I am the one who assumes responsibility, regardless if it is outside my job description.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Discipline. Through discipline, you can sharpen your skills and outwork talent. Doing the things that you hate to do but still doing them anyway will take you far in life.
