Meet Luisa Alejandre of Pompom Florists in North West Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luisa Alejandre.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been very much into the world of Art and Design. I actually studied Design back in my home Country of Mexico, while still in Mexico, I received a Bachelor’s degree in Comprehensive Design. I focused my studies in Industrial, Graphic and Urban Designs. I ended up studying three variations of design because I simply couldn’t make my mind up into choosing just one category of design. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful for all the knowledge my studies in design have given me up to this day, but when I think back to how difficult it was for me to choose just one area of focus when it came to design, that’s when I should’ve realized the commitment wasn’t there. Perhaps too early to know then, but, I now realize that what was missing was my true passion. Design wasn’t my permanent passion, and it also definitely wasn’t the end of my career path.

When I moved to Houston four years ago, my life took an unexpected career change. I took upon the challenge of working in Hospitality. I worked at a beautiful Luxury Hotel for three rewarding years. Three years of hard work and dedication passed on by and I soon realized, Hospitality wasn’t going to be my career of choice. Something was still missing in my career path. Around that same time, I was planning my wedding. I was happily engaged and gushing over all of the details I got to hand pick to make my wedding day as special as I wanted it to be. During this time of transition and new adventures, I found my true passion without even knowing how or why it had taken me so long to find it.

I got married back in September 2016. I enjoyed planning all of the wedding details, but what I enjoyed the most was picking out my wedding flowers. I was genuinely amazed by all of the possible options. The textures, and the shapes, and oh don’t even get me started on all of the color variations. I could go on forever. One of my closest friends is a florist as well, so at the time, I couldn’t think of anyone else better than him, to execute my wedding flower arrangements. He did an amazing job! Anyway, after the wedding. I started giving serious thought to what I should now do with my life after so many transitions, it was clearer than ever for me, I remember saying to myself “I have to learn everything there is to know about the business of flowers, I want to be a Florist”.

I reached back out to my friend and asked him for guidance. We actually ended becoming partners, He taught me everything I now know and continue to learn about flowers. I spent one month working with him at one of his flower shops back in Mexico and ever since I made that bold decision of becoming a Florist, there has yet to be a day where I don’t think about or grow more knowledgeable about flowers.

I opened my floral business, POMPOM Florists, 8 months ago. It’s been a challenging experience but it’s also been the most amazing one for me. Starting your own business will always be an absolutely crazy idea, even more so, a very risky move, but following your dreams makes the crazy risky choice so worth it.

Working with flowers brings me peace, and learning new techniques is always fun and challenging, but what makes everything worthwhile is when I get to see my client’s reactions when they receive my flower arrangements.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Before I decided to have my own floral business I wanted to work first in a flower shop or very close to a florist to get exposure, experience and to confirm that flowers were my true passion and unfortunately no one was willing to hire me. Either because I didn’t have enough experience or because they were afraid that I will leave pretty soon and take all of their ideas with me which wasn’t my plan.

I just wanted to learn and to have someone to trust me and believe in me.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Pompom Florists – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Pompom florists is a Floral Studio servicing the greater Houston Area. Pompom specializes in all types of flower arrangements and bouquets. Whether you’re sending your love, celebrating a special occasion or memorializing a loved one, in addition to weddings and events we do weekly flowers installations, corporate flowers and home decor.

We are a local company, and we strive to source as many of our materials locally as possible.

What sets us apart from others is our colorful and exotic flower arrangements, we try really hard to make things different, playful bouquets, lots of textures, mixed colors, to do what it’s not expected, not afraid to take risks.
Also we do door to door delivery, same day delivery as well as last minute delivery.

We want to make a connection with our clients, to make them feel comfortable and create a professional relationship.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are planning to open our new studio, probably at the end of the year.
We are looking for the best option and the best location. It’s going to be a studio but we will have also flowers available to purchase, similar to a floral design house.

Also, we are working on our own website, we already have one, it’s more a portfolio, but we will have really cool stuff and it’s going to be very interactive.

Of course, it’s in our plans and our goals getting new accounts, new business, more partnerships and new projects. It never stops, become better and better.
