Today we’d like to introduce you to Majick Rapps.
Majick, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out in music when I was about 9 or 10 when my uncle would write raps for me while he was in prison and send them to me. I took to it quickly. Not long after I started writing my own poems and raps. I was kind of a natural, to be honest.
I released my first mixtape my freshman year at Prairie View A&M University in 2010. It gained a nice buzz, but I didn’t have the resources I felt I needed to be successful. I would release two more mixtapes while in college before dropping out to help provide for my family. I never let the flame I had inside for the music die out, though. I dropped four more mixtapes between 2012-2015. I gained recognition and a reputation for being a dope lyricist and that never left me. I started traveling early 2015 to do shows in New York and Los Angeles. In May 2015, my run was put to a halt when I caught a case that could’ve retired my rap dreams indefinitely. Fortunately, I ended up signing for probation in 2016 and was blessed with another chance and a new outlook on my goals. I had to go all in.
It took me a while to find myself as an artist again since I had been through many things in my life I had not experienced before at that time. I released my latest EP, TRILLMATIC, in June 2019 on all streaming platforms and it was my most successful project to date. It took a lot to get to this point, but I’m proud to say that through all the trials I’ve faced, the one thing I never did was give up. I have a story to tell and you can start with track 1 on TRILLMATIC if you want to get up to speed.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like I said, there’s been plenty. From dropping out of school to sell dope in my neighborhood, to catching cases that got me offered 30 years on my first court appearance, to everything in between. This has been everything but a smooth road, but I’m still here. God willing, the only place I’ll be going to is Top 10 on Billboard.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m naturally an artist, but I also do songwriting for other artists. Dillo Life Records is my independent label that I will launch soon. Dill Life Clothing will also be launched 2020. Besides the rap culture, I recently got into real estate investing. I’m proud of the person I’m becoming and look forward to all the blessings coming my way within the next couple of years.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started dropping music way earlier than my freshman year of college. I don’t regret it at all, but I do feel like I missed a valuable time to grow as an artist before my peers.
