Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik McGhie.
Malik, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For me, it all started the moment I decided to fully and completely believe in myself. And I don’t mean that surface level of “belief”. I mean that moment where you deep down decide to go for something and give it you’re all. Regardless of what “they” say. And for me that was Events.
I graduated from the Hilton College at the University of Houston in 2014 where I ultimately cultivated my passion for event management and the love for the hospitality industry. I immersed myself in the idea of entrepreneurship and started assisting with planning events, both on and off campus, through various opportunities in conjunction with my formal education from college. After graduating I became a corporate event planner and realized I wanted to do something for myself. That was the moment I decided to put my all into an art show.
Since then, I have planned and managed multiple events for clients, starting working withMYEVENTISTHEBOMB, an awesome new startup photo booth company, that is taking Houston by storm, and successfully created a new platform for local artists through the All Access Art Show!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has definitely been a challenge. But lucky there are people along the way that teach you things and help you stay focused. After graduation, it took me a while to find a position where my skills would be best utilized and that’s when life really hits you. There is no curriculum or laid out path for you like before. So what do you do? I chose to dig deep and that attitude has sustained me throughout the years.
The crazy part is when you actually achieve your goal and your ambition grows. Then the next challenge comes and it’s twice as large as the one before! At the moment, I always go back and tell myself “You’re the one that signed up for this. You’re the one that said you wanted this. Now that it’s here…. what are you going to do?” I find that dialog very self-motivating and has gotten me through a lot of tough moments.
Please tell us about All Access Art Show/MYEVENTISTHEBOMB.
I work for MYEVENTISTHEBOMB Houston Team and am the Sr. Event Producer. I handle the marketing, sales, and managed services for Houston and pretty much the boots on the ground. HALO is a simple but sleek design sends the photos directly to your phone to instantly upload to any social media platform. Its a hit at every event and definitely sets us apart from other photo booths!
This works extremely well with the All Access Art Show and my main duty is to execute the overall vision for the brand. We host this event 3 times a year in Houston and our team promotes one of Houston’s leading art events that shines the light on over 25+ local creatives. Most unforgettable experiences come from the most remarkable people. With the All Access Art Show these artists have the stage and exposure to manifest, create, and express their talents. We are extremely proud of what we have built and now expanding to Dallas this Summer.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I was born in Brooklyn, New York but I would say my favorite childhood memory would be just hanging out with my brothers and sisters after school in Houston. There are 5 of us in total. I have one older sister, a twin brother, and a little brother and sister who are also twins. So yes, two sets of twins! We grew up in a 2 bedroom apartment on the southwest side of Houston after leaving New York and a few years later moved to the Cypress area. Even though we didn’t have much at that time, when I think about it, it always brings great wonderful and happy memories.
