Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcy Fair.
Marcy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was a reading teacher who loved to dress up and fashion.
During my pregnancy with my now 3-year-old son, I had a strong desire to leave my job and stay at home with him. I was so scared because my husband is also a teacher and coach and teaching was my basically my identity.
I knew I had these feeling for a reason and decided that I would quit and we would somehow make it work. I quickly realized I needed something that was my own and always dreamed of starting my own company. Not knowing what to do, I began styling people and tutoring students in the evenings a few days a week. I felt like I was all over the place because I was doing two jobs at once, but wanted to stick with what I loved.
While I was tutoring, I began creating resources that I always needed in my classroom, and were using with my students. Seeing fast results with the kids I was working with, I started selling them online, and began to see great feedback from customers and had a huge sense of fulfillment. I started Marcy’s Mayhem to help reading teachers with resources that can help in reading and with fashion ideas.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I am very mixed on this question. Has it been hard, YES! Starting an online company definitely pushes me out of my comfort zone, I am responsible for all aspects of business, which is something I never experienced before.
There are definitely days that I think, what in the world am I doing?? I have had days that I have cried or had a hard time figuring out how to do something.
With that said though when I look back, the road has gone rather smoothly. One thing I have learned along the way is that on those days, I need to log off the computer, take my dog on a walk, play with my son or just do something I love.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Marcy’s Mayhem story. Tell us more about the business.
Marcy’s Mayhem is an online store that teachers, administrators, and schools can buy digital products for their upper elementary school students. I love sharing fashion ideas and deals that I have found and love.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am a HUGE believer in God putting the right people in your path and that I was having the urge to leave teaching for a reason. I also believe that when you are feeling something in your heart that you should follow your instincts. It will be scary but trust your gut!
