Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisol Esparza.
Ballet Folklórico Azteca de Houston was founded by Rosalio Peña Jr.† in 1992. Under the direction of Marisol Esparza, instructors Rosalinda Medellin and Miranda Freyre, Ballet Folklórico Azteca is dedicated to the research, preservation, presentation and education of the Mexican culture and heritage through dance, music, and art. All costumes worn are an authentic representation of customs and culture of the various regions of Mexico. Since its inception Ballet Folklórico Azteca has provided training seminars to the community in an effort to exhibit a rich ethnic heritage. Ballet Folklórico Azteca has presented programs in Mexican Folklore throughout the Houston area for students K-12, Universities, special audiences such as the handicapped, senior citizens and hospital patients. We have performed for the Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, Houston Texans, Houston Dynamo, Golden Boy Promotions, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. ABC Channel 13, City of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Houston Zoo, Uptown Lighting, Disney World, Disneyland as well as throughout the State of Texas at various competitions.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely NOT! Nothing is easy or everyone would we be doing it, right? Although I am the director, we operate as a team/family unit. I value the input both Rosalinda and Miranda provide and that’s where it can be challenging at times. If I had to describe our personalities, we are like Randy, Paula, and Simon from American Idol but I won’t say who’s who. LOL!
What else should our readers know?
We are most proud of being able to teach the traditions of our Mexican culture to children throughout the city of Houston.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Our foundation is the reason we are still going strong after 28 years. When Rosalio Peña Jr.† founded this dance group in 1992, the foundation was set. We operated then and now as a team and are more of a family which makes it easier to communicate, create a positive environment to welcome new members/families, have the same goal and reach it.
