Today we’d like to introduce you to Maxwell Jones.
Hi Maxwell, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
For most of my life, I’ve suffered from high levels of stress and anxiety. I jumped from doctor to doctor, trying to find a solution that didn’t come with its major drawbacks. I found that lots of medication I’d been prescribed all had their different side effects, and I could never find something that really helped.
CBD products were then made legal with the 2018 farm bill, which saw a sharp increase in the different CBD products on the market, all making amazing claims about the things they could help with. From CBD creams to CBD tinctures to CBD dog grooming supplies. You name it. Someone put CBD in it. At first, I was skeptical but started hearing more and more success stories. I decided to give it a try myself. As an ex-marijuana user, I gravitated towards the CBD raw flower. I bought some, took it home and YouTube “how to roll a joint”. (It had been a while)
Immediately I started feeling the relaxation and calmness I’d been looking for. Fast forward a few months and I started to notice that the quality of the Raw CBD Flower I was getting was really quite poor. It was doing the job I wanted it to do, but the quality just wasn’t there. This is where the idea for Dark Sky CBD came from. I then got with my brother and two friends of ours and we started planning.
We found that the best quality flower available was grown indoors, under a controlled environment. At the time, the licensing for growing hemp in Texas was not complete, so we launched our growing facility in Tennessee, operating our office/customer service here in Houston.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening a small business in a brand new industry during a worldwide pandemic has been a wild ride. Between learning the regulatory process as it is built and juggling constantly changing COVID-19 regulations across two different States, we’ve all had our hands full.
One of the struggles with growing hemp plants high in CBD concentration is making sure they don’t test over the legal limit for THC concentration. Federal laws dictate that limit to be no more than 0.3% THC. There are times when we’ve had crops test over the legal limit, and we’ve subsequently had to notify the correct government department and then simply destroy the entire crop. This is one of the most frustrating parts of operating a hemp-growing company. One thing this experience has taught us all here at Dark Sky CBD is to not take the present for granted. Enjoy the moment because things can change in an instant.
We’ve been impressed with Dark Sky CBD, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Dark Sky CBD specializes in indoor-grown, premium CBD flowers. We focus on trying to produce the densest, most flavorful and high potency CBD flower.
One of the things that I am most proud of is the dedication that my team put into finding eco-friendly packaging materials. It’s incredibly difficult in this day and age to operate a business completely green. We are certainly not perfect, but our raw flower containers are made from a new type of enzyme driven, biodegradable plastic. Essentially this means that unlike other plastics, over time our containers will degrade and not be left lying in a landfill site for the next million years.
Over six months ago, we started receiving emails asking for us to produce other CBD products. Although growing was our passion, we understand that many people don’t want to smoke/vaporize. in lieu of this, we recently launched Dark Sky CBD soft chews. These soft chews contain a mixture of the cannabinoids CBD, CBG, and CBN, which work incredibly well with each other and are receiving amazing feedback so far.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Trade shows are fantastic for networking. If anyone reading this is really interested and driven to get into a new industry, tradeshows are a must. Yes, the majority of people at a tradeshow are there solely to sell, but there are always informational booths, live talks regarding industry regulation and information, and all kinds of people who are willing to discuss what they know.
