Meet Melanie Perkins of Mama Dots Sweet Shop in Katy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Perkins.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Melanie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After obtaining my grandma Dorthy’s secret pecan pralines recipe, I founded Mama Dots Sweet Shop as a way to earn supplemental income in March of 2018. Unfortunately, tragedy struck in the workplace and I was abruptly laid-off in June 2018. This allowed me more time to focus on Mama Dots Sweet Shop full-time and work towards building my brand.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been an easy road. Some of the challenges that I have faced, are the financial burden of not having steady income to invest into my vision of building this brand. Another challenge was starting from scratch! I do not have a business background, therefore I am figuring things out as I go.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Mama Dots Sweet Shop, a family-owned business, home of the best pecan pralines around. I was born and raised in Baton Rouge, LA and currently reside in Houston, TX. I am a wife and a mother of two beautiful children. I have been watching my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother prepare all sorts of desserts in the kitchen my entire life. My grandma Dorthy has perfected several desserts including her homemade pecan pralines and I have mastered her technique. My goal is to share the joy of these wonderful praline candies. I know that everyone will be pleased with each bite.

Mission statement: Pride and Joy
We are dedicated to making our treats with all natural hand-picked fresh ingredients. We take the utmost pride in our desserts. All treats are prepared upon order and always made with love. Our goal is to share grandma Dots’ authentic Louisiana pralines with the world!

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was quiet and observant. I use to watch my mom and grandma in the kitchen. I can remember the smile on my great grandmas face when the family would compliment her on the meal she had prepared. I have the same smile when someone taste my desserts! It gives me pure joy to see them so delighted.
