Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Mendez.
Hi Melissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Living in Washington State was the real catalyst for our love of craft beer. That area has had a robust craft beer scene for some time so when the military took us there, we fell in love with the craft beer atmosphere and of course the variety of beers. From there, we found a home brew shop in downtown Olympia, WA, where we did our first official brew day, after that, it was just a hobby turned into a passion. After several years, we played around with the idea of one day opening a small brewery until we finally felt the timing was right in early 2021. Doors opened on August 19th and we just had our grand opening event and annual trunk or treat on October 22nd. It’s still a little surreal.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’d like to think that all breweries in planning face their own sets of challenges and hurdles but the biggest unforeseen obstacle we ran into head first was 8.5% inflation and supply chain delays. We accounted for inflation in our risk analysis but not at the levels we have seen over the last 6 months. We adjusted as needed and made it work but that was incredibly difficult to navigate but we made it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We founded Project Halo Brewing to have a platform that allows us to share creative ideas with our local friends and neighbors in Fulshear and the surrounding areas out West of Houston. Those creative ideas are expressed in beer form and through our social media footprint.
Project Halo is known for a few things but I would label our core beer styles as gravitating toward Lagers and American IPAs. We constantly brew small batches to have a wide variety of beers for our patrons.
We also seem to brew some uncommon styles that are perhaps not commonly available in this market such as a California Common Ale, Baltic Porter, Mexican Amber Lager, and of course COLD IPA which is our specialty beer style.
We’re proud to be very strong supporters of our local businesses and organizations and of course the Houston area Pink Boots Society Chapter, which is an NPO that helps educate and network women and non-binary individuals that work in the fermented beverage industry.
At Project Halo, we focus on the beer experience and pair that with endless montages of music videos and conversations with friends and neighbors. We are a boutique-style brewery that is dog-friendly indoors and out and also family-friendly. Currently, We’re open Thursday-Sunday and hours are posted on our website and on our social media channels.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The biggest characteristic in our success is the strong will to work hard and problem-solve. We constantly negotiate obstacles and that has allowed us to do more with less so we can focus on entry and assets where it matters most.
