Meet Michael Dixon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Dixon.

Hi Michael, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was always a musical kid which is weird because I don’t come from a musical family. According to my grandma at the age of 3 she knew I’d be doing exactly what I’m doing today. My middle school band teacher Mr. Cook saw something in me and he persuaded my mom to let me do music and not push me into the family path of sports. Mr. Cook gave me the space to learn how to express myself musically. My mom bought me a keyboard, I taught myself how to play and I wrote my first song in the 7th grade called sail away. A song I wrote about hating the present and longing for something better in the future (deep lol) I performed it in a talent show and to see everyone’s response to the song was an amazing feeling. It was at that moment I realized what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and that was creating music.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Unfortunately, I learned long ago that my purpose as a songwriter requires me to always be going through something. God has given me the unique ability to be able to turn my struggles into relatable songs. Majority of my life I’ve dealt with insecurities and body dysmorphia and not knowing until later in life that I was dealing with mental health issues. In high school I dealt with suicide really heavy and that carried into college. I was afraid to tell anybody what I was dealing with because I didn’t want them to label me as crazy. In 2012 I woke up and couldn’t hear out of my right ear and over the course of the next few months I lost hearing in both ears. For the next 2 years, I dealt with that until Feb 2014 I woke and could hear perfectly fine. 2017 I finally started therapy and my life has changed drastically since.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a singer/songwriter mostly in the genre of gospel music. As a songwriter I’ve written for a lot of artists, most notably I wrote a song for Gene More Jr called “Love Like You” with my brothers Deejay Lowery and Ced Smith and that song was a part of Gene’s album “Tunnel Vision” which was nominated for a Grammy!

As an Artist, I’ve released one full project “The Walk on Water Project” which debuted #9 on billboards Top Gospel Charts.

Currently working on a new project called “How are You Healing?” Which is a musical project about mental health. Trying to help break the stigma surrounding mental health in the black Christian community. Prayer AND Therapy can coexist

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
