Meet Michael Meldrum of Tejas Treffpunkt in Arts District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Meldrum.

Tejas Treffpunkt is an event Founded by Porsche enthusiasts and collectors Antonio Kawage, Michael, Rudy Mancinas and Niels Meissner.

With a shared love of all things Porsche, they decided to collaborate to bring Houston a special Porsche/Art/Charity Event, distinctly different from what’s on offer in the Houston area.

It’s not the traditional early morning show judging who’s got the shiniest car but a laid back event with interesting Porsche’s including rare vintage race cars, custom outlaw builds, daily driven cars with patina and even a few special water cooled cars.

Having special cars is a great but they all agreed it has to be in the right setting and they hit a home run with the location. They’ve found an incredible art gallery, Spring Street Studios, with space to show some special cars inside and lots of parking outside to display more cars.

As the event was at a gallery, it was a natural progression to include art, so they invited artists to display their work and to a few specially commissioned items for the show.

Finally, add in a sprinkling of great local food, drink and music and they have all the ingredients for a special event.

The icing on the cake, is the opportunity to give back, the event is supporting a wonderful local charity, the Snowdrop Foundation, helping child cancer patients.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m not going to lie, the first event in 2016 was a hectic day, there were some surprises but the main challenge was the sheer number of attendees, initially we expected around 500 visitors but the attendance ended being over 1500. I think this is what we call one of these “good problems” and it was rewarding to know that this unique combination of all types of Porsche and local art drew such a crowd.

For 2017 we prepared for a larger number of attendees and thanks to everyone’s hard work the 2017 event was a far more organized affair.

Please tell us about Tejas Treffpunkt.
Tejas Treffpunkt is an event for classic and current Porsche enthusiasts. Our aim is to have a fun, chilled experience combined with the world of art.

Showcasing the whole Porsche lineup from the 356, the 911, to the Transaxle and current modern water-cooled cars all curated as art with food music and drinks while also contributing to our charity Snowdrop Foundation, which grants scholarships to kids recovering from cancer.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Like my fellow organizers, the passion for Porsche started with a childhood Porsche experience.

From a young age, I’ve been hooked on Porsche thanks to my Grandpa, my first Porsche memories are sitting in the back of his 911 with his beloved Staffordshire bull terrier. Through the years, he owned a 356, 912, 911T, 911 and a few 911SC’s. I was particularly fond of the SC’s with their “picnic table” rear spoiler. This was not a nickname but describes how it was used during pit stops in the country.
