Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle McKeel.
Michelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2007 I started working as a clown. I was new to the Houston area and, since I had worked with children before and have always been creative, it was a natural fit. I grew to love the work and in 2012 branched out on my own.
Around that time I discovered that my love was balloon twisting and that I had grown into a confident, fun, slightly sassy, kids entertainer and no longer needed to hide behind the clown image. A few years later I started twisting balloons in restaurants where my confidence really showed up. I’m still known as ‘Shelly’ and you can find me under ‘Shelly the Clown’ but I no longer wear clown make up.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Running a small business is not a smooth ride. There are many ups and downs and unexpected things come up constantly. As the saying goes ‘Expect the unexpected’. But all of the struggles along the way have been learning opportunities and made me a better Kids Entertainer and business owner.
Working long hours is just part of running a small business. I’ve found that the most difficult thing is taking time to slow down and care for myself. There are always more things to do, contacts to make, balloon ideas to create and paperwork to do. Learning how to be okay with a never-ending to-do list is one of my biggest challenges.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Houston Balloon Artist – what should we know?
Houston Balloon Artist is a balloon twisting company located in Houston. I twist balloons for a variety of events from birthday parties, weddings, grand openings and fundraisers.
I’m known for the detail in my work which sets me apart from many balloon artist. When people think of a balloon artist they usually think of a simple one balloon dog or sword. I like surprising people with detailed balloons that sometimes include stickers, feathers, gems, etc.
And I do larger sculpture balloons and decor.
While I’m proud of my balloon twisting stills but there is so much more to being a great balloon artist. Knowing how to communicate with both children and adults, to handle stressful situations and treat each person with dignity and respect are things I pride myself on.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Over the years so many people have influenced my business. As a small business, every client who refers me to someone or leaves a positive review is playing a role in my success. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to continue my work.
The Balloon Twisting Community in Houston and around the world has been invaluable in their knowledge, advice and support and without them, I would be lost.
