Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Robertson.
Michelle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I come from a very creative family that enjoys art in general, but I noticed throughout my upbringing that taking photos played a very important role in my family. My father used to always take photos and video record everything because he wanted to capture the moments so that we would be able to look at them later in life.
Fast forward to 2007, I lost my father to cancer and one of the few things that helped me afterwards were photos. I felt close to him and was able to remember the details of the moment of each photo. This prompted my continued passion for photography.
Shots by Mimi was started in 2019 as a hobby and soon turned into a business for me. I practiced, self-taught, took online courses, and reached out to my established photography friends to guide me in the right direction and provide me with tips and advice.
The support and help of my friends, family, strangers, and community have helped so much in the growth of Shots by Mimi.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Whew, if it was easy everyone would be doing it, right? Haha. It’s been as bumpy as some of these Houston roads!
There were a few times I wanted to quit because I wasn’t growing as fast as I wanted, the market became over-saturated, and business was slow. I had to remind myself that there is only 1 ‘me’ and the market needs a ‘me.’ I had to remind myself that every day is not going to be the greatest and every month I will not be as busy as the last.
There were times I reached out for collaborations and was told no, but I did not let that stop me from doing what I love.
We have to be able to adjust to changes, ups/downs, no’s, and lack of support. Starting a business is tough and pushing through when you don’t have support at times is so important!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Shots by Mimi was created to capture those special moments, one shot at a time.
I specialize in portraiture, graduations, senior photos, maternity shoots, content creation, branding, and headshots. I’m known for my style as well as my creative eye.
I’m focused on creating a comfortable environment for my clients and ensuring they enjoy the shoot. My priority is to ensure my clients are happy with the moment that was captured.
I’m proud to be able to connect with my clients and create lasting relationships. I have been collaborating with some major brands that have been amazing.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The industry has been pretty saturated due to the recent pandemic, so I do believe it will continue to grow. So many people found a love for photography during quarantine and that is amazing!
I’m planning on getting more collaborations with companies and showcasing my photography in galleries.
